Time to leave

In my time here as a regular visitor and infrequent poster, I've noticed a substantial shift in the general atmosphere. If you're not one of the top ten here, your contributions are ignored as if you were interrupting a private conversation.

I honestly believe now that this gang never actually runs film through cameras--they sit and pontificate, living vicariously through this stupid electronic window. I've offered what any sane person would consider to be sound advice and opinion, only to be completely ignored.

Hey, if I wanted to go out of my way to be ignored I'd have got married. I'll continue to check in, but this would seem an appropriate final post, given how this thread began.

It's been real and it's been fun, but it hasn't been real fun.

Interesting comments and a different point of view. I'm not certain that I know who the "top ten" are but no one is excluded from posting their opinions and expertiences. I often post without a single reply directed toward my comments. I don't take it personally. If I did, I'd have left the forum long ago. I figure it's all in the give and take of an open conversation.

Sometimes, when two or three posters are discussing a point, it becomes the focus of that thread and most members just follow without comment. Becoming a part of the exchange may not be possible.

Again, it's sad to have someone leave the forum unhappy but it's their decision. I hope you're able to find a more compatible forum soon.

This is exactly opposite what I perceive.

One of the most frequent threads on the general board is welcoming a new member, and I rarely see a newer member's request for help or advice ignored.

yossarian,
Sorry that your feelings were hurt when you felt that you were being ignored. On the other hand, if you being ignored by this gang that never actually runs film through cameras--that just sits and pontificates, living vicariously through this stupid electronic window, why would you care? Godspeed, have fun.

welcome robert. i hope this bru haha doesn't scare you off.

as far as a top ten or poularity contest i must be out of that loop as many of my comments are completely ignored.
and rightly so if they don't hit home for people - case in point - the why are we here thread.

also please consider, we have cared enough to meet at times, spend time together in 'real' life.
this summer i met up with scott s, rover and scarpia for a great day in new york. others have just met in the west, england, so our posts with comments to any of these folk might sound more friendly and familar as we have faces & personalities to put with the internet names.
i hardly think we are exclusive or too inclusive, in fact it's a polar opposite as i see it.

Shoot Film? I'll be shooting film. I just got a J3 adjusted for a member, did four lenses for another, and have two more incoming. Not to mention my own J-3 project. I've been given heads-up on lenses I've been hunting for and had the entire forum stay away from it after placing a bid. I've received tips and parts, and offered the same.

I've been using the Internet since 1980. It does not get better than this. We have a Moderator who does his job. We have members that hold their fire when "trolled." If someone posts a question, members try to answer it. If I have nothing to add or help, I "try" not to just make up something.

Sometimes I figure if I walked away I would have more free time and make more money selling on EBay. But it would not be the same.

I don't know why but this famous quote from Blade Runner comes to my mind:

I benefit more than I contribute and try hard to share what I know about the Contax G system and digital storage as well as backup.

I still hope that we can counter trolling with humour instead of name calling and this place does feel like a virtual pub for many years to come.

I don't recall Blade Runner making any references to the Contax G! lol

And trolls, what trolls? Frankly speaking, I don't know what you're talking about 😉

BTW, what lens did you use to take that pic, Socke? I really want to say 50 Summilux (pre-asph), but I'm not sure. Was that a Zeiss 45 f/2? I find the bokeh eerily familiar, but something's "missing" in the signature from what I know of the Summilux pics.

Back on topic: sorry to see somebody go. I don't know what the "story" is, or if I'm missing something, but as far as I can tell, you will always be welcomed back. Happy trails...

That happens to all of us. Sometimes no one knows how to answer the question, or it just slips through the cracks.

I just went back and re-read your posts. You haven't been ignored, unless it was by not being specifically referenced in a torrent of replies in which everyone was pretty much saying the same thing. And I have that happen to me as well.

Sorry you feel that way, Fred. You have a lot of retail experience and I believe a lot to share based on your personal expertise handling all types of cameras.

I actually thought most of us *do* go out and shoot. I know I spend about every weekend I am not doing work for the Knights out with a camera, and I often post the results here.

But sometimes it is best to take some time off. I did that just recently - it was nice to get away, and nice to come back again.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Me and all the film I have lying around waiting to be scanned and/or developed, also bids thee auf wiedersehen.

I must apologize beforehand to everybody else who feels left out because I have a life and cannot possibly respond to the hundreds of posts on this forum. If you feel personally attacked by the glow of my absence, please, pontificate back. After all, our life is dedicated to nothing but this forum 🙄

I put this down to the holiday season everyone can get a bit emotional at this time of year. Anyway you guys think yourself lucky I had to break up a real fight in my bar yesterday, luckily these days I am much better at pre-empting these things, so I got in there before a punch was thrown

You know, I was thinking the same thing myself as I drove home from work today. Holidays - ugh. Everybody gets tense, I know I do. Who needs 'em?

Best Regards,

This is a great site for general and specific information, and most of the members are friendly. Also, it's a good place to buy stuff. I already bought 2 items from RFF members. 🙂

I remember Bill Mattocks himself one day, a long time ago, pointing out how his comments were being ignored. They weren't; it was a case in which all that was needed to say was said in such an economical way that there was simply no need to add.

My posts and remarks have been sometimes ignored in some threads, but that also happens in real life. Imagine this forum if we all were the "Miss Congeniality" type! 😱

In any event, when someone leaves with a grand gesture... nothing happens. Those who prompted the writer to cast a malevolent spell on the doomed forum care nothing, and those of us who read and reply to threads are lumped together with the bad boys. Not very mature in essence.

At one point in my life I thought about making a grand exit off an organization I used to belong. I drafted a resignation letter, meant to be read during my last meeting, and then gave it to a friend to look over, expecting his validation. All I got was a look of certain contempt and a question: "And what will change after you read this letter? Will the world be any better? Will the guys you don't like change their ways?"

I swallowed and had to admit it. It didn't mean a thing.

So, I wrote a run-of-the-mill resignation and remained in very good terms with all the people involved.

Now... as for the forum changing... Of course it does! 🙂 And it is exciting to see the growing pains that change brings about! 😀

Frankly, since I don't believe in the "Top Ten" deal but I really like this place, and also because I appreciate the different personalities of the people who participate here, I intend to stick around for as long as my job allows me to do it. And if I have to leave... it'll be for vacations! I don't want Dave sending the mounties to my door.

Wait... it wouldnt' be the mounties 'cuz I'm in Illinois! 😱

Now... let's post on the thread "Top Ten Reasons This Forum Rocks" and let the naysayers naysay. 😉

Ah well. That's one face I recognize, going away...

But words like never and last are too final. Peoples' activity on internet fora wax and wane. It wouldn't be fair to take that as a sign of anything. So (despite what you have said), don't hesitate to return if you think better of it. I'm sure no one will make a fuss about it. If you're experiencing burnout (whether you know it or not), better to just lie low awhile.

As for RFF, I haven't noticed anything I'd call a problem. I try to be reasonable and I find others do too. At least most of the time. Expecting everyone to be reasonable all the time is itself unreasonable, is it not? Hmm.. a paradox.

FWIW, I was on vacation for a week and took two rolls of 24 exposures each plus a few extra frames on roll three. They've been developed but I doubt that any will appear here as they were all taken with a Pentax Soptmatic II. I know...... shame on me but I had my reasons for taking the Spotmatic. I'm only confessing to show that I actually DO take pictures but not all of them qualify for inclusion on this forum and I won't use SLR pictures here except under unusual circumstances.

Some folks have said they felt their posts were being ignored......

I think this is unlikely, - most posts are read as part of the thread, but not every one has anything to say in response.

Just because folks choose not to respond, doesn't mean you're being ignored.

p.s. I do think we could take a lead from Monty Python though, and have a specific thread to go to when you want an argument.
