Whoah! All these Marketing Experts analyzing the Leica Company and giving advice in regards to the market and talking about sensor size, the cost of waffers and blabla (all picked up in dpreview's Canon forum over time). All Quite pathetic, all quite silly, IMO.

Let's face it: Leica is expensive, it is not for everybody out there (or it wouldn't be luxury any more) and there is Voigtlander for the hardcore purists (yeah, I repeat: PURISTS) that believe in performance, not only in prices dictating quality. Think of the "diminishing return" song.

Why is everybody wishing Leica to become like McDonalds? Why is the M8 supposed to sell like if it we're Bic Macs? Why is everyone concerned about Leica surviving the Market?

I am sorry for the cheezy car comparison, but yet there is some truth to it: Not everyone can own a Ferrari, not everyone should own a Ferrari, not everyone should be allowed to drive one either.

All the marketing experts around here wouldn't be hanging around if they we're real marketing experts in the real world out there. No Marketing expert would be crying about a 5000$ camera being too expensive. Not when they know that even Horse **** can sell for big bucks if well packaged. That it's not about the Price.

Geez! Can we go back to picture taking? With a voigtlander or Leica, who cares! Leica is about being filthy Rich and ignorant about diminishing returns? So what!

So how about you, NB23?

Should you be allowed to own a Leica or a Ferrari?

How about an independent committee to vote on whether you should or not?

If every average Joe would start owning Ferraris, I know I'd stop lusting for one. You see, I accept that car to be unattainable without crying out loud that Fiat should sell them for 39,000$ so the whole world could own one.
Same goes for Leica: Who can't own one should stop complaining and work harder to save pennies.

It's really not hard, actually.

But you said some people should not be allowed to drive a Ferrari.

Should you be allowed to use a Leica? Who decides?

By the way, I am a marketing expert. I do hang around here.

I have an M8. I could buy 100 M8's tomorrow if I wanted them. It's not a big deal for me. I have plenty of pennies.

Even if I had a BILLION dollars, I would still feel foolish paying a ridiculous price for something. There is a difference between being rich and being a chump.

There you go again.

But wait a minute... You own a M8. You complained it is expensive. You're a Marketing expert. And... you're a chump (according to your logic).

Something's very, very wrong.

Ah, but I didn't say I paid $5000 for my M8.

I have my alternate sources. When I dump it I'll make a tidy profit. I'll keep an RD-1 until I can get a full-frame rangefinder, or manufacture one myself in China one of these days.

I can't believe where this is going. Incroyable!

Okay, we all know you're a marketing expert with powers that lift you beyond the chumps that are paying the big price.

But between me and you (and this whole forum), I prefer being friends with the Mega-select-few-chumps that are invited to purchase the Enzo Ferrari (Yep, the only ones allowed to purchase it) rather then being friends with a made in China freak.

Well, I am astonished too about the amount of discussions regarding Leica's future. On the other hand, if nobody would discuss it, I would get some doubts if Leica has any future...

Then if you don't like things made in China I take it you've never had a Chinese girlfriend.

This is a great life tragedy for you.

I even more highly recommend Japanese girlfriends.

You can keep the Ferrari. Like W.C. Fields said, "nice to look at but I wouldn't want to own one"

No, this isn't about ferrari. I'm sorry to have confused you so much with my example. It's over, okay? No more ferrari. It's really and only about a 5000$ camera. Really not as bad as you're trying to make it sound. Sorry.

Well, I am astonished every time how people can start talking about a camera and get carried away to the point where they make a point out of mentioning their disposable income, call each other chumps and made-in-China freaks, or advise each other on the choice of girlfriends.

That was kinda the whole point of my original post.

And please note I do not own a M8.

Hey, thanks for participating.

On that note ned, Here's a crappy thumbnail from a contact sheet of a guy I met trying to hitch the other day.

Quality sucks but at least its better than the debates going on lately. 🙂

I cant wait to be able to scan all these negatives I have... sooo many.

friends.jpg

His name was Pheonix. His best friend had just stolen his girlfriend and he was hitching from Savannah to Miami where his father lived. He had been with his buddy and gf hitching through the apalachain trail across the U.S. Despite the long trek he seemed happy and entertaining. I was walking past the on-ramp and saw him a ways down the road and thought to myself... "ok.. if i dont photograph him, I will regret it forever. " So I went outside my comfort zone and did the obvious. Talk and photograph. 🙂
