I gotta admit I am kinda suspicious too.

Its an old well errr...... well lets just call it "business model".................... Get hundreds or maybe thousands of hopefuls to pay moderately largish amounts to participate in a contest in the hope of winning a prize that when viewed objectively is of dubious value to the winner and which costs the provider basically nothing. Nice work if you can get it.

When you Google "Format 2011" (where your winning entry will appear, you find a site called Photoxels. On the Photoxels home page is....wait for it - a big banner headline about their contest. The same goes for the "British Journal of Photography" - an impressive sounding name that on quick review seems to be owned by or associated with the same folk judging by the content (which includes a big banner headline for - you guessed it, this contest).

The main claim to fame of Photoxels appears to be an index of camera reviews found on other sites (could not see any original reviews by staff of the site itself) and an online "store" which does nothing other than link you to Amazon.com ........hmmmmmm not much original or interesting there.

It smacks of a new online store trying to build traffic. If so its a bit rich to charge people for entering a contest from which only the site will really benefit. Good on them if they wish to start another online resource for photographers and want to make a quid out of it, but give me a break! The business model seems a wee bit "sharp" to me but by all means you make your own judgment call.

BJP- oldest photography magazine in the world , continuosly published since 1854, was weekly , recently gone monthly.
I'd suggest you do more than a quick review next time.🙄

Reserving reproduction rights for promotion is pretty standard clause found in any contest.
 
I don't see what is unfair about using submitted images to promote the competition - don't most competitions do this? An entry fee in competitions like this is not unusual - the judges have to get paid for their time and expenses.

As mentioned above BJP is a very reputable magazine and Format is a major photography event her in the UK.

Yes, that's the same rule in pretty much in every competition you enter.
 
The £20 fee will serve to maintain a professional level to the competition. BJP is a pro magazine after all. Incidentally I love the new monthly format and even though I'm most definitely an amateur, it's a really enjoyable read.
