To Damn Hot to shoot

I took my family out this morning to work on some portrait shots for my portfolio.
We drove down to Bok Tower sanctuary which got clobbered last year from the Hurricanes... Alot of the big old oaks were destroyed (something like 200 blown away) and the rest suffered damage. Anyway there is not as much shade as there use to be... About half way up to the Tower I realized that we were all to sweaty in the 90 something degrees to take any portriats.... and it was still early.
So here I am complaining.. I had my heart set on working these negs. today..

Oh well I guess it will have to wait for cooler times..
 
Miserable in the NE too. I always remember though that I have a friend who moved to Phoenix, and no matter how hot it is here, this year it has been unbearably hot in the SW.

Hey, they had record snow in Australia a few days ago. I can't wait for it to show here again.
 
It's 90 degrees here at the moment and I've pretty much given up on going out to take pictures. I walked my dog at about 11 PM last night which is normal for me and it was about 76 degrees and very humid...... in a word, nasty! Even the dog doesn't want to go as far as she usually does.

I can't wait for October to get here so I can enjoy cooler weather. Between 65 and 70 is perfect, IMO.

We've had some very violent weather in the Boston area this afternoon but this morning I managed to shoot a roll of color film - portraits of my kids for a holiday card in December and they are back from the 1-hour lab and look good. 🙂 Yesterday it was in the high 90's and very humid but the thunderstorms this afternoon seem to have broken the humidity.

Also tested my "new" 28mm Hexanon-M for the second time on another M this morning and the lens focuses accurately both at 0.7M and infinity so I'm pretty happy, despite the weather.

 
It's pretty humid here and it's 32 celsius, but this summer's avg was 29-30 , and that's not bad, still an air breeze from time to time, cools everything...

Early morning at 7 am is a perfect timing to bear wandering around...

I've been to Canada(ontario) those last 3 years(a month or 2 each year between toronto, hamilton and mississauga and nearby towns) and it's usually hot for me, except for last summer...
 
I've got one more day to work tomorrow, before a 4-week-vacation coming up, and of course the forecast says it is going to be getting worse (rain, cooler temperatures) next week... Maybe I'm going to spend a bit of time in the darkroom, then, Nicole has to work for another week before her 3-week-vacation, anyway.

Here in Portugal it was today 40º Celsius. But here in my region it's a normal summer temperature. No clouds at all. Just a big beautiful blue sky.
 
Too damn hot here in upstate NY as well. We got kayaks this year, and I 've been out on the Hudson with a camera around Troy, but even on the water its hot.

So imagine what it is like to go out on a 6000hp freight locomotive to "load box" it for a few minutes, and open the doors to check it out while it's roaring in the eighth notch.

Then you know what "too damn hot" really means.

Anyway, I'm visiting the cousins in the Finger Lakes this week, should be cooler on the shores of Seneca, a very cold lake.

And then at the end of the month a few days at my family camp in Vermont, which is usually 10 degrees cooler than nearby Montpelier.

Here's a shot of my wife utilizing the dock there for some summer reading. Looking at this picture cools me off a bit.

Same here! And I went to the flea market this morning wearing a black t-shirt! Not smart! Got a Weston Master II light meter for $5, though, so it wasn't a total loss.

Bill & I & our wives are going to the mountains in early September. Hopefully it'll be a bit cooler then. It's always at least 10 degrees cooler there than in our part of North Carolina, so that'll be some relief. At least I'll feel like getting the camera out!
 
Everything is relative. We had a brutal July with temps above 110F for a couple of weeks straight and topped out at 118F. Then came the monsoon with some spectacular thunderstorms. The past week or so it's been in the high 90's which feels positively pleasant.
 
Even the "usually" cool northwest was up to mid 90's today. Luckily here the humidity is only 37%, so it's not like the eastcoast USA.
It's predicted to drop into the 70's later this week, back to normal for here.
 
The heart of the US is brutal too.. big guy + 95 degrees F + humid, still air = big sweaty guy.. and nobody likes to see that! I was in Chicago last week and only got through 2 rolls of film cause I just couldn't concentrate on anything except sniffing out some air conditioning like a blood hound. In contrast, I went last December on a similar trip up there and blew through 8 rolls. Discomfort kills creativity..

I did check out the Taryn Simon exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Photography while I was there (they keep that place cold.. it was heaven!) Those portaits looked amazing. Seeing so many photos on the internet and in books/magazines, you tend to forget how much power a large format, beautifully printed 30x40" photo can have. I'd recommend the exhibit to anyone that has a chance to go see. At the very least, it'll get you out of the hellish weather for a bit.
