The thing that really bugs me about Ken Rockwell is not his over the top opinions on some things. Its his over the top super saturated colors. I need two pairs of Raybans on when I visit his site. Yuk.
 
That D500 is a hell of a camera... priced accordingly. Some people use these "Pro" crop bodies with teles for extra reach. The D7200 is the APSC model you go for if you'd like to save over FF.
 
Looking at your web site, Joe, I've got to ask, what the heck would you do with 10 fps of what KR calls "Nikon's best DX sports camera"?

In that price range, the X-Pro2 seems a much better match.

you're right about not needing 10 fps...i shoot one frame at a time and very rarely rapid fire...the 500 is a bit of a dream, an 'extra' kit for some play time of a different nature...if i won the lotto and filled a room with gear it would be in the dslr section.

As far as I can remember from reading your posts, you have not bought a FF digital camera yet.
IMO, if you have a digital camera itch to scratch..... try full frame next time around.
See if it adds something to your repertoire.
I use the little fuji's for unmatched convenience and small size (ok, some other aps-c and m43 may match).
The FF sensor Canon 5Diesel still rules the roost among my digital Cameras.

i had been looking at the ff 750...seems more my style than the other ff cameras out there.
 
The D750 and DF both seem like great cameras.

I started early with Canon eos in order to adapt my Contax Slr lenses.
Even fit a focus screen from a Contax RTS in my 5Dii.... It's so much higher contrast and more effective for manual focus yet still works with native eons AF lenses.

The sony a7 may be cool since you are used to evf's.
You can mount your FD lenses on it for manual focus use if you like.
Over the years I've drifted from manual focus to af (as many have).


It's still nice to be able to use some of my old lenses at their native focal lengths.
 
The D500 is a great camera for its intended use. I use mine primarily for birding, using a 200-500mm lens. It would certainly be fine for the types of images that you take, but I agree with Andy re: getting an FF DSLR to scratch that itch. I use a D800e for FF images, using a few prime lenses. I'm a HUGE fan of the Sigma ART lenses. Also as Andy suggested, the A7 would be cool as well. I use my A7R as a companion body to my ZI and use M-mount lenses for both.
 
NPS had a D500 body at the RNC and I got to use it for one night. It's a really nice camera, and felt much more like my D4 than it did like a D7200, just very solid feeling. I think it would be great for high school sports, or any subject where you're shooting in low light, and need lightening fast auto focus and clean High ISO.

And it would also just be a cool little camera to have. But alas, way out of my current price range.
 
Joe, a question, one I ask myself from time to time:

If you're a one-shot-at-a-time, street and day-to-day photographer (not heavily into sports or fast-moving kids photography), what draws you to something like the D500 instead of the Fuji X-T2 or X-Pro2? It seems to me that for someone with your photo interests (which appear to be similar to mine), a mirrorless APS-C camera much better suits your needs.

it's the actual camera itself. the look, the feel...i love the fujis and they are/will remain my main kit...the way my arthritis is going i'm not sure how long i could carry my canon f1 or any of the nikons really...i might be feeling a bit of panic believing i might be much more limited sooner than later.

I use the D500 and D750 in combination for my safari work. The D500 with 80-400 VR for long work, D750 with 24-120 VR for close in work. The best combination I have come up with for wildlife. The D500 is wonderful for action.

Not sure that these meet your needs however. If you go Nikon, the new F1.8 primes are amazingly good for the price.

been thinking more about the xpro2...
thank goodness i don't have the cash for any of these cameras at the moment as i've decided that i want them all!

Yeah, I find that sometimes its good not to have extra cash that you want to spend badly... I'd have a Leica Q and that new Hasselblad mirrorless if I weren't currently in save mode. 😉
