To IR filter or not to IR filter?

I just picked up my M8 and I am starting to use it with a CV 15, CV 28/1.9, CV 35/1.7 and an uncoated Summar. It took a little bit of tweaking to get the focus right for all lenses, but things seemed to be working out OK for that.

Going IR is going to be a PITA for me. All my LTM adapters have cutouts so not only would I need filters, but new adapters and milling to boot. Nearly all of my work is B+W, mainly urban landscape and some outdoor work. I am obviously not worried about magenta issues but I am concerned about OOF infrared "glow" mucking up images. Are there many/any who are going IR filterless and happy with that?

Me too, IR filter on all mine lenses except 21mm 3.4 Super Angulon, need special order filter. For BW you soon notice reds render too light, with a kind of semi infrared look to them, not to good IMO.

You've come this far, go the extra mile, it's worth it.

Oh for the CV15, save yourself the trouble of getting an expensive adapter to fit the filter.

• Just either carefully apply a judicious amount of black silicon to the filter threads and stick onto the lens or
• wrap some plumbers tape around the filter or wedge some a tooth pick between the filter and the inside of the lens shade

People have noted the adapter sometimes results with additional vignetting, YMMV

Hey Eric, Yah the 35 and 28 and working out just fine. The 35 is very sharp. I sold my 35'lux ASPH to pay for the M8, so I'm pleased that its replacement is pretty decent.

Just use a filter on the 35 to start with, because it does not need the coding... and see what you prefer.
After 2 years using the M8 i still am not sure if i prefer the B&W results with or without a filter. For faithfull color... filters are mandatory!
OOF IR Glow ???..... yes heard and read about it.... almost never lost a shot in real life due to it!

Some say that the extra bit of IR sensitivity adds a little more richness to shadows... And FWIW Ilford XP2 Super (and perhaps other chromogenic B&W films) has more red sensitivity than the regular silver-based films, and that may be one reason I tend to like its tonal qualities.

Anyway, here's a shot from the M8 with 28 Summicron and just a UV/haze filter, where the gent's shirt and pants both showed distinct purplish tint, so I converted it to B&W... (Locale is Hagar Qim Mnajdra Archaelogical Park near southern shore of Malta)

I really didn't want to sell the 'lux, but when I did the math and found that my 'lux was worth 3/4 the price of a used M8, I took the plunge. I'll probably end up buying it back at some point. It wouldn't be the first time a bought a lens I had sold!
