Tokyo (from my perspective)

These are images from my stay in Tokyo at the tail end of 2010. The full series of the first installment is posted on http://electricrockinghorse.wordpress.com/, and I will post more series every few days.
This is now the second time I have visited Tokyo and I feel as if I have a very personal connection to the city. It makes me feel tiny, insignificant and unimportant - yet absolutely alive and invigorated. The combination of the intense masses of crowds and energy combined with the inevitable alienation that accompanies being gaijin in a foreign metropolis fascinates me, and even after a combined overall 2 months spent in Tokyo alone over the past few years, the city never ceases to surprise and delight me every time I turn the corner.
On this particular trip I was using a Canon 1n SLR with a zeiss 35mm, sigma 50mm f1.4, and a canon 17-40mm, with various color and B&W films.
Hope you enjoy as much as I did!

I like all the photos. The grain on that last one plus the colours and bokeh are sublime, not to mention the moment of focus and concentration of the subject.

Thanks, yeah I adore natura 1600 - love the grain and the colors and everything! Wish it was more available outside of Japan..

Very nice series, Gavin. But I don't really detect "sabishii" in your shots 🙂
Edited to add: maybe because I'm used to Tokyo. New York felt like a much more lonely/sad place to me.

Really nice shots. i've only been to tokyo once but loved it so much, i get what you mean about isolation. It feels so different when compared to australia but it is a very enjoyable and also comfortable type of different would love to spend allot more time there.

That's interesting! I found NY to be quite energetic. I'm only trying to represent certain moods of TYO - I'm not saying TYO is lonely on the whole, just some aspects of it - the main one being that you very quickly become aware that you're a very small fish in a very big pond. Personally I find that exciting, but also lonely in a good way if that makes sense...

Did you use a filter on the first photo? And add sort of a vignette to it?
No. Fujifilm changed the name to "Natura" as part of their efforts to promote Natura cameras.

No filter, and no vignette in PP. Just ektar colors in mixed lighting and using the 35mm distagon wide open.
