Too Many Damm Choices

I am almost 60 years old and don't know much about digital (Old dog, new tricks.) I have an M2 with 15, 21, 35, 50, and 90 lenses as well as a couple film SLR's. My only digital is an X100 which I still find pretty amazing.

As with a lot of people on this forum, GAS attacks from time to time. I think about going totally digital and think M8, M9 or X1Pro. If I went X1Pro, I would sell the M lenses.

I know if there are 1000 people on this forum, there are probably 1001 opinions. I know most cameras these days are really, really good.

So, would the M8 still be in consideration. I think it would be pretty awesome teamed with a 35f1.2. Is the M9 worth the extra $3000 or should I look at the new Leica for the same price as a used M9?

If I am honest with myself, the M2 and X100 suits all my needs. But photography is almost as much about the equipment as taking photos (just look at all the threads on equipment on this forum if you think I am wrong).

Yes, and I have both (M8 and M9). Having all your focal lengths 'stretched' by the M8 was OK when there was no alternative. Once you can use a 'real' digital M...

Oh: and I'm 62.

both the M8 and M9 are fantastic. the M8 shoots better B&W for sure....and the M9 has more accurate cropping.

i bought my M8 a few months ago and am totally in love with it. Definitely a great buy for the money.

I got the Olympus EP2 as my first serious digital camera. I loved the images from using the Zeiss 85mm 1.4 lens with it, getting a 2X crop.

Then I got the M8, and I was thrilled with the results when using 50mm lenses as portrait lenses with it, with the 1.33333333 crop.

Then I got he M9, and I now have the perfect set. The M8 is now my B&W camera for portraits, while the M9 is the general camera or all cases. The EP2 has become my tele camera with the awesome Zeiss 85mm lens.

Life is good.

You cannot go wrong any way you choose to go. Honestly, as a former M9 user that downgraded to the M8, it would be my last choice (due to the crop and unless you are fine with printing small). I own the X100 and X-Pro1 as well. The X-Pro1 is even better than the X100 in many ways, so if you like the X100, you'll like the X-Pro1. The M9 is a fantastic camera. I need to get one back since the M8 is not doing it for me anymore.

He's probably thinking used M9 which is around $4000 these days.

IMHO, other than a new warranty, there is no advantage to buying a new ME v. a used M9 in good condition.

Also, for the OP, if you do decide to buy new, your best bet would be to take advantage of current exchange rates & quirks of Leica pricing & order from a dealer in Europe (e.g., price of a new M9-P is $6380 U.S. from Leica Shop v. $6995 from B&H).
