Too many picture posts?

I agree with you, Erik. I know that sarcasm usually flies unnoticed and is mistaken for serious banter. Sarcasm is also a bad thing in some cultures, so that doesn't help (they don't make a distinction between sarcasm and passive-agressiveness). So in case the tongue-in-cheek-challenged didn't get it: it was tongue-in-cheek. 😛

Rant aside, my point is: there is diversity in photographs and people's backgrounds. We should take diversity for what it's worth. (Unfortunately, "diversity" tends to be a very narrowly-focused concept and noun this side of the pond). Could you imagine a rule banning sunsets or flowers? If one does not like something, the mere dislike is not grounds enough for discriminating against something.

I think the rule of allowing people to post many photos at once really turns away people who are more serious about individual pieces.

The last few times I posted an image I noticd this. There are 9 slots to display shots in the gallery section, and in under a half hour my shots were nowhere to be seen. I have seen this happen a lot more recently; when I first started posting at RFF I got actual comments on images. Now there is no chance for anybody to see them unless they go digging. And who has time to go digging through all these almost identical snapshots that keep flooding the gallery?

I think this is a problem of multiple posting. Right now, for example, the 9 slots are filled with snapshots from one person.

I just think we should be limited to one shot per day at most. That might encourage people to post quality rather than quantity. I don't mean to sound elist but the situation has become ridiculous, I have seen people fill the slots with vitrually identical shots, as if they are trying to show us how to bracket exposure or something!

Keith, I went back to the beginning and re-read your original and first post. Then I thought lets see what Keith is up to.. photographically speaking. I'm stumped. I can't find your gallery... ?? It would be nice to see your work, is it off site or at RFF because there is no link to a gallery in your profile.

I'd still like to have some way of uploading a photograph into my gallery without polluting the most recent gallery if I feel there is no need for it to be there.

Jaap, I find the "private album" option useful for this, especially for photos I have not yet decided on. Of course, there was a thread against this a few days ago. You can't please everyone, I guess, but IMHO this is a useful gallery feature available to all.

(No longer directed to Jaap) I understand the points made, but I am not so sure how important having your upload stay on the "front page" really is. As Joe does, I typically view recent uploads in "1 day" or "7 day" groups, and never confine myself to looking only at the 12 (or now 20) on the first screen.

Secondly, there are thumbnails to help me decide if I even want to look at the photo in depth. Obviously, if I see 10 photos of the same subject then I won't bother to click on all (or any) of them.

It would be nice if the slideshow function worked more smoothly.

All in all, I think the gallery here is good and it is nice to see that many are posting. Inclusion and diversity have always been the key to RFF. Just try to make the most of the gallery functions - it really isn't too hard to be selective in your viewing. More reasonable than imposing your standards on other photographers, of various levels of experience and skill.

EDITED: I did not / do not endorse equipment elitism... or photo elitism... or spelling elitism! And I wish that people would kindly form their own threads for indulging in chatter of that nature. Really, some people thrive on inflammatory dialogue. Hasn't it been known for centuries that different people place different values on different objects of art?! What a battle-worn subject.

I think what some of us are talking about is why it is hard to make comments and have time to view new gallery postings. For sure very new postings have a short life span and do indeed attract some comments simply because they there to be seen at that moment.

My point about other sites DeviantArt being a good example - something like 26,325,698 images (of all types of media) have currently been posted. The intial home page is granted, rather confusing and sometimes bears little reference to photographic postings but by logging in you can immediately see who has posted what etc from the people who you link to, and who has visted your images, left comments and notes.

I think that should such a system exist here on RFF people could post as many images as they want, of whatever they want and others could browse and comment, and give feedback. Many posters would feel that their work was seen and appreciated by the RFF community.

It felt to me Keith from your first post (some 7 pages back ) that your point was that too many posting were swamping the gallery and not giving anyone chance to really have time to comment but if photo sites like flickr and DeviantART can handle huge uploads and people still able to comment then it must be the navigation system and the way that people are alerted to posted comments that builds further exposure to posted images and a ensures developing dialogues about them.

Hey Keith, I don't know what is happening but the link for your gallery .. it goes to something but not your gallery. I went to yours thru a link Sbug provided above these posts. I recall looking at your work and leaving a comment.

Back on topic , hopefully your post will get some wheels moving on the gallery's format to find some way to work out the issue.

Since you mentioned it, Ray, I have to confess that I have been enjoying the RFF gallery there as well. I think the gallery features are user friendly - nothing beats just leaning back and watching an outstanding slideshow of RF photos. The overall quality of which, I have to say, is outstanding!

Also nice to have all my photos in one place - RF, SLR, digital, and just send it to the appropriate groups. Much more convenient for my non-camera geek friends who could not care less what camera was used. 😉

My point was not that one shot is worth any more than another. Each of us will have varying opinions about the merits of a shot, but that's one of those obvious points that people state over and over, ad nauseum.

The whole point of my original post is that a lot of shots are going by without any comment.... and I happen to think that is unfortunate. Like others here, I am a member of a site where every shot gets comment and there is more of a sense of community discussion, not just empty drive-by comments like "nice shot!"

I am not whining about my stuff, I get comments and I am grateful for those. But the rate at which images stream by, it's very tough to keep up unless you have hours and hours to spend. I really don't think it is deep mathematics to see that the number of comments per post is inversely proportional to the number of posts, and the situation is not improving.

Bottom line: I am asking about ways to boost the ratio of comments😛osts on the site. If that makes me come across as a newbie on high horse, well so be it.

Jan, I did indeed see a comment from you, thanks. I don't know why the link in my footer is or isn't working- yesterday when I clicked on it, it took me straight to my shots, but not today. I haven't made an 'album' so maybe that's the issue. Maybe the link isn't static unless I put my shots in an album, I dunno.

good point, Keith, and I wopuld agreew with you if you were a bit more civil and not talking about "snapshot". Who are you to decide if someone's art is "snapshot" or bracketing exercise?

Anyway. I noticed the same. I put up some shots and they are gone very quickly into the dark corners of the gallery. It's the drawback of a growing community, i guess.

The problem with heavily limiting the upload on a per day basis is, there are some people who don't upload anything for months and then they have many shots they would like to receive some feedback on, so they upload them all at once. SOme other people have time everyday to better distribute their photography (which includes uploading but not only - also development,scanning,postprocessing). If you limit upload per day to 1-2 shots, you are supposing everybody has time to upload some on every day.

Maybe then there should be a limit per month, and maybe the random selection of featured small images should be limited to one photo per member per day. I really don't know what is best.
