I have an A7R with a thin-filter and full spectrum conversion by Kolari. I use it:

  • with Sony FE lenses
  • with adapted M-mount lenses
  • IR photography (with 665nm and 850nm IR filters)

I use hot mirror filters for the FE and m-mount lenses when shooting 'normal' color photos. It has worked well for the above intended uses, but over the past few months, I haven't really been using adapted M-mount lenses nor have I been shooting IR.

I've been using my A7R primarily with the 28mm and 55mm FE lenses, and have recently purchased a 135/1.8 SAL lens with an LA-EA4 adapter (at an excellent price). So, with my new intended uses, I'm wondering if my needs are better served by an A7II.

Your thoughts?

My experience with my A7II is that the camera has some sensor issues. The A7RII doesn't seem to suffer the same. Fortunately I'd bought extended care coverage for the A7II, but two issues and repairs in 3 months was enough to send it off for cash when it came back 2nd round. A7RII can be down-sampled to 24MP from 42MP if you prefer, but there is still an improvement in the image. My experience isn't definitive by any means, but more common than it should be (2nd problem was definitely a "known" start-up fail). Otherwise, it's a decent camera. Yet the A7RII produces images that are "wow" while the A7II does not.

I'm interested in this - I'd been considering an A7ii, but have gone a little cool on the idea. Would you mind describing the sensor issues on the A7ii?

Also, the "wow" comment interests me. I've seen the output that the A7Rii produces, and I see the "wow". The 'R' would be very nice to have, but costs more than I can justify. Additionally, I don't want to have to handle >40mb Raw files, so I thought about the A7ii instead. However, the samples from the A7ii that I've seen, seem to lack something (apart from the resolution:rolleyes:).

The high resolution of the 'R' doesn't interest me at all, but I had hoped that the A7ii would offer similar image "wow", albeit with a smaller resolution... seems perhaps not, though. :(

I have a Sony A7ii that I've purchased use and thus far no sensor issues thus far... Am also curious about any potential issues that may arise.
