Travelwide 4x5

I've just committed to getting both Travelwide bodies, after looking around and reading up on this thread and elsewhere for the last few weeks. Thanks to Ben and Justin for starting this very cool project. I was basically debating between saving up for a handheld 4x5 such as a converted Polaroid Land 110A/B or Fotoman/Gaoersi. But, this is simply too good to pass up in terms of cost!

Now I'll be looking for the appropriate lenses, but it's also very nice to be able to use the pinhole as-is...again, this is a great effort and I'm looking forward to the cameras!

OK... perhaps a re-think on the Geronar....

OK... perhaps a re-think on the Geronar....

It's actually more complicated than that. Although the 90mm Geronar was supplied in a Copal 1, it's a non-standard Copal 1 that requires a much larger hole - some have said 60mm, some have said Copal 3-size, which is 65mm.

On further checking it appears you are correct. The lensboard hole for the Copal 1 that appears to have been used for the Geronar is, in fact 60mm. That seriously changes consideration of the Geronar, as I dont' know if there is that much meat on the front of the helical for the 90 travelwide to feel good about cutting the hole that big. ?????

It looked to me like there was a good bit of room on there if needed, but Ben should be able to clarify.
There's definitely room for it, but it may be tricky to cut away that much plastic and keep the hole circular and centered... Depending on how much you want that lens on there, might be more trouble than it's worth!

It would be fairly easy if a stepped drill bit or reamer could be found in the proper size:

No idea if they come that large, though.

Now if the impossible project will make me some 4x5 films...

They can't, the machines no longer exist.

I bought the 90 when it was still available for $69. Mad I waiting a few seconds because I could have gotten it for the $49 option.

Here's the nice thing about Kickstarter, whenever you see one that you might be interested in even a little. Buy in. You can always cancel later on. But you can't get that cheaper option down the road.

You remember these from HS.

You place a transparency on the bottom lit glass top, and a 90* mirror on a 2foot extension projects it on a wall...

I must say, this is the first (and only) Kickstarter project that I've seen and thought, "hey, that's pretty damned cool."

And now only four cameras away from 1000 pledged. Amazing - this for a 4x5!

And now 999......;).
Yes, it's amazing.
I remember a statement from Mike Walker, who makes the Titan Pinhole cameras for IlfordPhoto:
At Photokina fair last year he said he had already made more than 1,400 4x5" cameras.
Therefore not unlikely that until now about 2,000 Titan pinhole cameras have been made. And recently their 8x10" Titan Pinhole hit the market.

Let's hope that all these cameras will get lots of use!
I will never forget the moment I saw my first large format slide on the lighttable:
A breathtaking experience!!
Large format slides, they are so awesome.
Only the unsurpassed color brillance and real life look of slide projection is even better.

In digging for lens alternatives i've found this thread and i'm very excited, just got my 4x5 holders.. just need a tank now and a lens, oh and some film.

So just to be sure, an Angulon 90 with a Synchro Compur shutter (ex Linhof) should work ok without any adjustment?

Cheers - John

Hi guys,

I'm the creator of the Travelwide, along with my friend Justin. TRUST ME when I say this camera is lighter and easier in the field than a Graphic. I took a Super Graphic all over Bali a year and a half ago. In October I went to Brazil with the Travelwide, and there is no comparison. 5+ pounds versus less than one pound? It makes a huge difference. HUGE.

Honestly I'm a little surprised to see this camera pooh-poohed by users on this forum. I'm a longtime RFF fan, and I basically made this camera for you. It's lighter than a Zeiss Ikon, which is lighter than an M3. And it's 4x5!

To get a better sense of what's possible, take a look at the sample images on our Flickr:
http://flickr.com/photos/wanderlustcamera

These are not "demo" images. They're real snapshots I took while traveling or hanging out. Most of them are wide open (ƒ/6.8). The Angulon is not a clinical modern lens, so you won't see the detail at 4000 DPI that you would with a Zeiss. But then again, you don't need it. A slightly out-of-focus shot on 4x5 will beat the pants off the best Leica lenses and an M7.

Anyway, this camera is what it is: a tough, $99 hardbody scale focus camera that weighs basically nothing and lets you pack a 4x5 in addition to your normal camera setup. When I was designing it, the RFF community really was foremost in my mind. So I hope you guys like it and spread the word.

Thanks!

how about a clear camera-list with all the options.
there is a fixfocus 65mm camera. is there also a scalefocus one.
are all camprices the same 99 usd?

2. i would think about a preshift version/vertical shift. but we need tripod-mounts on both sides.

I believe that the FAQ on your Kickstarter page is incorrect where you mention what holders you need to shoot the Fuji FP-100c or FP-3000B films. You mention the Fuji PA-145 (which is correct), and the Polaroid 500 and 550 holders (which are not correct). The correct Polaroid holder is the 405. The 500 and 550 are for different films.

I think your camera is a great idea and wish you the best with it.
you probably meant the 545 and 550(packfilm). 545 is the right choice for NEW55(b+w negative and print) we are waiting. there is fuji 4x5 film around for sale. maybe a test for new production?

65/ f8 angulon?

65/ f8 angulon?

One of the pledges is for a 90mm body WITH an Angulon 90mm in shutter.
Also, another pledge is for a 65mm body WITH a 65mm lens in shutter.

It's all been very well thought out. For details look at all the pledge amounts. Frankly the amount for the 90 body with the 90mm Angulon is at a good price point.

Pledges are still being taken. The Kickstarter Project looks like it will have a $10,000 day, today alone. If each remaining day would receive pledges of $5000, that would add another $90,000 for a total of $165,000 and about 1500 camera's. Optimistic....????

travelmate 65 with angulon 65 f/8 does this work. with helical or fixed focus. you see have big confusion since you have no camera-list.

Joe, it is a function system up front: we will ship the cameras with a pinhole, so you can make images right away if you don't have a lens.

Schneider, Nikon, Rodenstock, Fuji and others manufactured a simply gigantic number of 90mm lenses from the 30s and 40s through the 80s. It's no exaggeration to say there are millions of 90mm large format lenses out there. The shutters tend to be in good shape; they're pretty simple mechanical clockwork shutters.

I guarantee we will not sell 100,000 of these cameras. It's simply not that type of product! We would be lucky to sell 1/10th of that, spread out over the next 10 years. But even that many is highly improbable.
makes 1000/year. how many people have already bought one or how many cameras are paid? So the others will have to wait a long time.
