his tri-elmar review on his site is much more a shooter's review than a purely technical one - he is very good at describing how each kind of lens "draws" the image, more from an artistic view.

I really tried over the weekend...

Because of this thread I went out of my way to try and get the Tri-Elmar to flare this weekend, but I must report that I failed.This is one of the results. It should have exhibited internal reflections and veil. It didn't....

Much of my picture taking is travelling so naturally I was curious about the Trielmar and I borrowed one for a week (the second version). I found that at 28 and 35 it blocked too much of the viewfinder for my liking, and that I still needed to bring a fast lens or two for lowlight and evening shooting, so I've stuck with the prime lenses. The DOF scale on the lens is a little daunting for the first day but you get used to it. Given the nature of rangefinder photography vs SLR, at least the way I practice it, having a DOF scale is essential.

A DOF scale can be helpful, but in practice I find that experience is far more accurate in judging DOF. The lens scale can never be more than a rough approximation.

Using the DOF markings for one stop (or even 2 at close range) wider than I'm shooting makes that rough approximation as smooth as a baby's bottom 😀 I've usually got my hands full using my experience to approximate the actual framing vs the framelines, and the actual metering area and subject tone, so if I had to judge the DOF mentally each time, I'm afraid I'd hardly ever get a shot off 😀
