I suspect the criticism about newbie photographers has nothing to do with the lens and more to do with the fact that digital plus a zoom plus lack of experience can encourage spray and pray. At the risk of stating the obvious, any lens, from a pinhole to a Zeiss Otus, is fine provided the eyes and brain are sufficiently engaged.

It was actually Scott Kelby who made that comment. He's a noted writer of many Photoshop books, and currently endorsed by Canon, so I guess that makes him both a noted photographer, writer and a blogger.

I'm capable of taking "boring" images with any focal length lens. To me "kit lenses" are a good compromise. The Fuji 18mm-55mm meets my needs to the extent I have yet to purchase other lenses for my XE-1.

Amazing point of view. My A900 with 24-70/2.8 or 28-70/2.8 is an extremely capable combination - if Kelby is unable to take good or great pictures with that combination he probably is a lousy photographer.

Content and point of view are much more important:

I got my XE 2 so I'd have a body for my Leica glass. I've never cared much for zoom lenses, but since acquiring the "kit" lens, I am finding I like it as much as any prime on this camera. It handles beautifully is light, compact and optically very satisfying.
