During the Credit Crises (2007) I purchase on EBAY an unusual Wetzlar M6 from a Canadian dealer who is based not far from the Midland factory. This particular dealer always seemed to either have cameras in really good condition or many times rare and unusual cameras.

My Wetzlar M6 is unusual in that although it is a Wetzlar M6 my camera features a Titanium finish on the top plate (knobs and levers are all chrome). The serial number pre-dates the later limited edition Titanium M6 Classics by five years and I figure that my M6 likely is a Leica prototype. Originally I thought my camera featured a brass top plate under the Titanium finnish, but now I'm certain that it is more likely a zinc top plate due to the signs of pitting and electrolsis from my body chemistry over the last 7 years of heavy use.

I do not think this is a modified camera, I believe it was factory original, and my M6 has all the appropriate "Wetzlar" features like the top plate engraving, the embossed "Made In Gemany" on the vulcanite, the funky earlier metering, the knurled metal rewind tip, the Leiz red-dot...

Anyways I would like to thank Roland for his wise recommendation of upgrading a M6 with a MP finder in lew of buying a new MP. I originally bought my clean M6 for $1050.00 because of the Credit Crisis, I would later learn that my "new" M6 (my first Leica) came with a dead frame counter, but I shot this camera for a year as-is with the dead frame counter until one day when the RF'er became irratic.

At that time I sent my M6 to Sherry for what I consider a "rebuild" because worn parts are acually replaced. At the same time I got a MP finder upgrade. Initially I was a bit disappointed when I got my M6 back because it was kinda stiff and loud like a new camera, and through extensive use it kept on getting better and better.

My M6 now displays some wear. The black anodize on the back door is starting to get silvery as the finish is wearing away; the top plate is pitting in areas from my sweat and oil; the vulcanite is worn smooth from the tips of my fingers on my right hand due to the use of a TA Rapidgrip; there is some brassing on the battery compartment cover from my fingertips also; and because of thousands of rolls of film the film advance and shutter are mucho quiet.

Recently sent my M6 back to Sherry, not due to malfunction, but for further mods: I wanted the 75mm frames removed because I love the look of a uncluttered M4. At the same time Sherry deemed that my windows needed replacement because of wear. She replaced my old windows with updated multi-coated versions.

Anyways I am so glad that I took Roland's recommendation. Know that back when I first sent my M6 to Sherry I inquired about getting the windows upgraded, but at that time she said, "Save your money." To me Sherry is the best. Because I followed Roland's advice I saved a lot of money and ended up with a very cool camera that has mucho individuality to the extent that it is now a custom camera that is like a "al la carte" M6.

Thanks Roland and Sherry.

hey Calzone

sounds like you have a great (and unique) camera....... how about some pictures of it?

this is the first I have ever heard mention of getting the windows replaced on a M
and it makes me curious if this would be feasible and if this would be possible for my 46 year old M4 (and what the cost would be)

Hey Cal, glad you like your camera, and you are giving me too much credit. Sherry is great !

I can return the compliment: tomorrow morning at 6am I will be photographing elephant seals with my F3, which I bought based on your recommendation 🙂

Sherry Krauter is the best of the best - second to none when it comes to Leica repair. She has integrity and a sense of honor and will always shoot straight and be honest with you. Besides all that, is is just a great person and a hoot to talk to. 😀

Glad to hear that Sherry is still in business. A number of years ago I sent my M4-2 to Sherry for overhaul and she was a joy with which to work. I had some good conversations with her -- she indeed has an interesting sense of humor.

You guys will just need to come to the NYC RFF meets to see Cal's toys.

Jean-Marc and John know me as a lazy slacker. LOL

I also annoy people by not printing and posting images, but generally I rely on my NYC digital NYC Meet-Up friends to post for me.

John BTW calls my cameras "Monsters" be cause I tend to add mucho accessories and like my personality my cameras are kinda loud. The black paint on the Leica and M6 disappeared over time, but I backfilled the engraving with a red wax crayon. I also rigged this M6 with a TA Rapidwinder and a TA Rapidgrip (this annoys John who is a good friend) LOL. Currently I created a custom hand strap that secures this Nikon F3P like rig to my right hand like a set of brass knuckles.

Part dagger (Rapidwinder film advance lever); part blackjack; part brass knuckles; I'm surprised that I don't get stopped for carrying a deadly weapon in plain sight. My Wetzlar M6 strongly resembles my Nikon F3P.

Understand that I'm a lazy slacker and that the February NYC Meet-Up is on the 26th so there will be a delay.

Roland,

Check out my F3HP that I recovered in ultra soft Italian goat leather in the "F3 Tribute" Thread. I'm giving Bob some leather to start a trend. Let me know if you would like some. In my exaggerated Calzone way I kinda started bragging that I created a "Prada" F3HP and anothe poster in that thread I upgraded a F3HP into a F3P (P is for Prada). LOL.

I found a square yard of this amazing high quality Italian goat leather in the garment district in NYC at a sample sale for $20.00.

I found that the leatherette made great templates as all sections came off in one piece so it is pretty easy to undo and replace the original leatherette if you like. Seems Nikon made it easy to remove for service.

I have a 1970 chrome M4 that I had Sherry service. Over the years I have learned that Sherry will openly refuse to do work that is unneeded.

What makes you think you need new windows. BTW with the older MP finder upgrade and the new windows my M6 has a stunning.VF'er.

Also know that twice Sherry personally delivered two different cameras to me in NYC to save on shipping while visiting.

Hmmmm, very Clever ploy Cal 😱

That M6 Looking for some extra Votes 😀

Yeah, Sherry yelled at me on the phone for wanting to send in my M6 for a meter problem.. It was pretty funny..

She said its probably this or that, try it, I guarantee it will fix it, dont be an idiot by sending me your camera and money for no reason... 🙂

Cal's M6 is something, but that M3....😉

Fidel,

Sherry sure is an interesting person. She kinda regulates me because I come up with crazy ideas. She definitely turned away a lot of work from me and steered me into more practical cameras. Perhaps she is like John and preventing me from creating more "Monsters." LOL.

For those who do not know: somehow at Adorama I snagged a 1956 M3-DS that was factory rebuilt by Leica. The M3 features a brand new "L" seal, new factory resilvered prism; new factory recovering, and of course a factory overhaul. The curtains also kinda look new to me, but I don't know this to be fact.

My friend in the vintage section told me, "You have to buy this camera." LOL. Initially I said "What's so special about this camera," because it was both kinda loud and stiff when I dry fired it, but when I was told about all the work at the factory that was performed I recognized the feel of a camera after it gets overhauled with new parts when effectively rebuilt. It had the feel of a camera that came back from Sherry after an overhaul.

This M3-DS is likely to be as factory fresh as it gets, and also know that it kinda looks unused because of its very clean condition.

Big distinction between a CLA and an overhaul IMHO. BTW with Sherry she replaces worn parts, and the added expense of these parts is why it costs more to get your camera serviced by Sherry. Basically you get what you paid for.

I purchased an M6ttl from Bellamy at JCH late last year. I sent it to Sherry for the VF upgrade because I shoot in venues that encourage VF flare and also for a check-up suspecting shelftime-itis. Sherry did her thing after sending me a quick note saying the body was very dry and needed a 1/2 overhaul. What a difference! The camera is a joy - smooth, precise, exudes that manual transparency that film M's can give a user. All this over the holidays too.

She's a gem!
