two questions about the ZI

Hi guys,
two small questions about the Zeiss masterpiece:

1) Is anybody using the camera with a 40mm lens such as the Nokton 40/1.4? If so, how does this lucky guy use the frame lines?

2) An annoying but inevitable question : how noisy is the shutter and, of course, how is it comparing to the M6 shutter?

It's noisy if you're used to a Leica, esp. MP. Cloth sounds so much more sexy.

Am I correct to assume that the 35mm frame line will come up when mounting a 40mm lens?

If so, the frame line being somewhat loose, a 35mm would indeed by equivalent a tight 40mm coverage.

Frames in RF's are not all the accurate. 40mm on a 35mm frameline will work fine.

Depends on the lens. For the several LTM-mount 40mm lenses
(Pentax, Rollei Sonnar, Olympus) you can get the right adapter.
For the other M-mounts (Summicron-C, Rokkor, Nokton) the 50mm lines
come up unless you have modified the lens.

WRT noise, you gain and loose with a cloth shutter: it's quieter
but you can burn holes in it ...

The shutter of the ZI is more metalic sounding but I would'nt say it was louder, just different. It's not bloody loud at all. Another exageration like the 35 Biogon is massive compared to the asph summicron. Wrong on both counts, don't exagerate because people make decisions on this information.

I think the ZI brings up the 50mm lines when using a 40mm lens...I sold my ZI a while ago, so I don't remember. It's louder than a Leica, but only slightly...very slightly. Great camera i you need AE, and don't want to sell your irst born!

I've used M's for 40 years and the ZI is simply a different and more metalic sound. I wouldn't call it "bloody loud". A jet engine or a jackhammer is "bloody loud" but not a ZI shutter. I've recently shot in a number of churches with both and never had a head turned from the sound of either.

The M shutter sound, sexy???

1. The ZI brings up the 50 frame lines with a 40 mm lens. I use a Rollei 40/2.8 LTM with a 35 mm adapter so I get the 35 frame lines. Works perfectly. The camera & the lens are a nice compact combination.

2. I can't compare the ZI with the M6, but a French magazine compared it with the MP in a test & found the measured db to be the same. I would agree with those who say that it has a more metallic sound. It doesn't bother me. The M6 is not silent especially at slow shutter speeds.

I use the 40f1,4 MC and SC on my ZI. The claw on the lenses has been filed to give me 35 frames and by using the inside of the frame lines it is accurate enough for me.
The sound of the shutter is very quiet, similar to a well used M2 or MP.
The Zeiss has a very smooth advance and the only beef I have with the camera is the bottom rewind and it tends to be a very stiff one at that.

Modifying the CV Nokton 40mm f/1.4

Received my ZM and the CV Nokton 40mm f1.4 a couple of days ago.

The Nokton brought up the 50mm frame-lines, not the 35mm as reported elsewhere. My Nokton serial number is 9660192, in case production batches might vary…I doubt it.

Under the kind advisement of Tom A, modifying the lens claw to bring up the 35mm frame-lines took 3 minutes. All I did was to mask off the site and use a needle file to carefully remove about 0.8mm of one claw edge.

Viewing from the mount with the white dot (cam) at 12 o’clock, the claw/edge in question is the sharp lower edge (sharp 90 degree) of the 9 o’clock claw. This edge depresses the prong of the lens preview lever. Since the lens mount is brass, the metal removal is not difficult nor the extents critical as the range of travel of the level is quite large.

Now the loose 35mm frame-lines become a tight 40mm frame, my favoured Nikon F2 style. 🙂
