Congratulations Don and Jim!

Don, I just wonder how you got around the model release requirement in the contest? Or was that a shot with no faces visible?

Street photography / documentary / journalistic work generally do not require a release.

Yep, but when I saw the ad there in April (?) issue, it was stating that releases in all categories required.

I might be wrong but I read somewhere in their info that releases wer not required for the above. Generally journalistic work do not require a release.

In the US at least, if the photo is not used for commercial purposes (e.g. marketing products, causes) or used in a way that is defamatory (e.g. suggesting in some way that the subject is doing or represents something she doesn't), a waiver for journalistic work is not required. At least there is no cause of action in a court of law, other than being a nuisance suit.

Imagine if you shot a photo of a track race at a stadium, you would not be required to obtain a waiver from every one in the thousands of people in the stadium. On the other hand, if you suggested somehow that the race was a meeting of KKK members (which would be an inaccurate representation), that would be defamatory and subject the photographer to liability.

Yep, so at the time I thought it was a bit strange. Anyway, maybe I just misunderstood, don't have that issue at hand.

I would like to again offer my congratulations. I ran out tonight and picked up a copy of the magazine. As you can imagine it is complete with wonderful photograph after wonderful photograph.

For the record, it is Issue 48, February 2007 the 2007 Single Image Contest Awards B&W Special Issue.

Thanks guys! Your turn next.
Congrats, wholeheartedly.

Well, entering those contests, seems like one must have an "in" or something. I seem to be in some very "obscure" stuff.

I got a photo of mine accepted for Family of Man II -- but never heard of anything about the project moving forward.

But talent trumps all. X-ray and Vincent, you guys are on my Top 10. So is Simon Labastier.

Ray and Robert Thanks 🙂
congrats to Don, Jim and Vincent in the lastest issue.
Of course, there are more pages and postings than I've read so far.

I saw your photos last month (the awards issue). Congrats. I should get a subscription; I got a copy on a whim, because they didn't have a copy of Le Figaro Magazine (I know they're not related).

Thanks for kind words Gabriel. You know I entered that set of work that appeared in Issue 44 in 2003 and never heard anything then one month before the issue 44 came out i was asked to supply the files that was in 2006. It's funny how these thing work.

Do the special issues come as part of the subsciption? With the newstand prices for these issues, a subsciption would be a good idea if they do.

Rover, did you get it from somewhere other than B&N? I don't have one near me.

We get the US version sold in Borders over here in the UK. If it's in, I'll get it this weekend. Congrats guys, and I look forward to seeing the work.
