I have a type 2 black rigid 50mm Summicron and the serial number on front of the barrel is 2270218. I just noticed that if I focus as close as possible, the barrel extends and reveals another number etched in the side of the barrel. That number is 2796221. Any idea what this second number is?

Can you post a picture of it?

My first thought is it might be someone's social security number, or an inventory number for a business.

Not enough numbers for Social Security. Drivers licenses maybe. OR, you have a lens head and focusing mount mis-match. Does the lens head unscrew from the mount? DR Summicrons have a lens head which unscrews from the focusing mount. Both pieces left the factory with the same serial number. That assures that the lens and mount match.

Ah yes. A picture is worth a thousand words. That would be what KEH calls "engraved". I did the same thing to my very nice Canon SLR gear back in the '70s. Dumb! It doesn't hurt the pictures for sure!

The numbers are etched using US style hand writing. Germans typically use different styles especially for "1" and "7". So it is not a factory or (German) service engraving.
