Believe it or not, I have never (in 40+ years) failed to pull out the lens properly and lock it. Lots of other mistakes, including forgetting to focus, but not that one.

Which of course means I'll do it tomorrow.

I have done the same when I first used my Elmar 50/2.8
I still regret the the blurred immortal and essential photos... 🙁

It is these little mistakes that make for a good laugh with the friends. A couple weeks ago while carrying around my Canon III, I focused and took a shot, then my buddy suggested I take off the lens cap. Simple.

recalibrating the rangefinder isn't too difficult. Just a yard stick and some screwdrivers will be enough to readjust the focus if it's off.

And how far away should the object be to calibrate infinity?

The moon is a good benchmark, if there's no moon I use far away trees. Something 100 meters away will do the trick.

As I understand it the formula for calculating infinity is 1000Xfl where fl is the focal length of the lens being used.

I always shoot black and white in my M3. Except that is, until I ran out of film last week and had to use an emergency colour one lurking in the bottom of my bag ...... yep, you guessed it! A whole roll of variously coloured shots, dependent on the filter on the lens in use........
