UK terrorists

It seems totally unbelievable. However, if you had the PM and the rest of the government read 1984, or watch the film along with Brazil and V For Vendetta, I'm sure it would be totally lost on them.
They probably have no idea of the monster they are creating.

Interesting discussion over on this thread..

And look at the sequencing... "identify" (and exaggerate the problem), Pick targets to demonize (cameras, computers, vehicles), come up with "slogans" ("watching over you 24/7," "if you suspect it, report it)", then pass a new "law." Step 2: Repeat as necessary.

They are after nothing less than your freedom and liberty. "1984" could turn out to be child's play.....

Nothing new really. Anyone remember this from 1971?

THE SPECIAL POWERS ACT - NORTHERN IRELAND. 1971.
under the act the authorities are empowered to:

1. Arrest without warrant.
2. Imprison without charge or trial.
3. Search homes without warrant.
4. Declare a curfew and ban meetings.
5. Permit punishment by flogging.
6. Deny all visits to internees.
7. Prohibit an inquest after a prisoner's death.
8. Prohibit the circulation of any newspaper.
9. Prohibit the possession of any film.

What in God's name has happened to the Brits?

I always thought you were more level-headed than us, in some ways, but f**ksake, this is crazy!

Add 'Children of men' to that list...

And here I am, wondering why such gloomy dystopian movies come out of the UK, a country I always considered to be free and democratic. Second time I have been naieve in a week.

We're all subjects of her majesty.
We have to pay a tax if we want to vote.

Hmmm, in some ways I am glad the cold war is now long over. Why?

Today I sent a small, yet heavy, package to mother Russia. Cost me less than 10 euros too, and no hassle.

There was nothing more in there than a FED and Zorki that need some TLC. Nobody will give a d*mn.

But what if my kind hearted, mild mannered yet unmistakenly bearded Muslim colleague would have sent them to his family? I'd rather not think about that.

The posters alone are so sickening that I almost hurled my lunch. It is absolutely disgusting to see.

That’s misleading, like all those are special powers/defence of the realm acts, there powers are only available under very tightly defined circumstances

Sure.
Like having an Irish accent for example.
Or long hair, or short hair, or wearing little round spectacles like John Lennon.

edit, Or carrying a camera in a public place?

The fact remains those powers are/were only available under very tightly defined circumstances.

And yes now you mention it, it was people with Irish accents who were blowing each other up

As a Brit and despite what many seem to be I'm quite proud of that, but I'm certainly not proud of this propaganda and knee jerk legislation which only seems to be surveillance by subterfuge. I have nothing to hide but increasingly I have noticed there is more of an air of suspicion when I'm out with my camera.

It's a shame because I love the landscape of this country and its humour and literature, its quirky bent on life etc. but its laws and legislators I find myself so diametrically opposed to.

One more step towards sedation and indifference of the masses: http://lilserenity.wordpress.com/2009/02/03/in-suburbia/ - stay inside, fear everything and everyone and for heaven's sake never love nor find passion in life...

@Sparrow,
Sorry , I didn't mean to argue with you. It's just that I feel that the government will invent any excuse it likes to "protect" us.

It used to be that governments promised us good things, a bright future, good education and health care for all. Freedom and liberty. "A land fit for heroes."

Now they exaggerate (invent) threats and enemies from which they will "protect" us. War on terrorism, war on drugs, war on crime etc, etc.

edit, I never noticed a a war on homelessness though.

I think Roger Waters had something interesting to say on the subject:

"Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say."

Common Purpose

Common Purpose

What in God's name has happened to the Brits?

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Purpose_UK

Common Purpose has been the subject of a series of publications circulated by writer Christopher Story,[9] a former adviser to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher,[10] and Eurosceptic [11] Brian Gerrish who claim that its aim is to control the United Kingdom and ultimately merge it into an EU police state. Gerrish has stated that Common Purpose wants "to kill you".[12] ...

This video by former navel officer Brian Gerrish is quite disclosing:
