Hi there

I am after some information. I have been offered a black paint summicron DR , with black goggles, which I have never heard of before and can not find any information on? I imagine if it exists someone here would have heard of it? Serial number on it is unusual as well, Nr 1531090*, with the asterisk??
Is it a repaint?
Anyone can shine more light on this lens?

In cameras, the asterisk indicated a reused serial number from an out of circulation body. I am not sure if that applies to lenses too.

Look for the factory-correct bright chrome bayonet, if the bayonet is brass the chance of it being a de-chromed and re-painted lens is a lot bigger.

Some well-lit images posted here would help too, the sheen on the paint and wear to the paint can sometimes easily give it away if it's a re-paint.

Surely a re-paint!! I'd still be interested in the pictures, to see how well that re-paint actually was!

Thanks for the Link Radi,
Infact it appears to be the exact same lens that has been offered to me, but not by the same seller on the said auction site. The story on the sale sheet is almost identicle though. Infact This lens was for sale on auction site, which ended last night. I missed out and got an email an hour later offering me the lense as the winner had pulled out.
I will try to download some images from the auction site, but if you look for completed auctions you should be able to find it.

Never even mind the "black paint" but doesn't the above statement adds credence to it being a scam?

If eBay, give us an auction number or link? If not, what auction site was it on? I've been unable to find it online... Thanks!

If the lens was offered to you via a "Second Chance Offer" then it may be legit. If it was just an email from the seller asking to sell off eBay, there's a very, very high chance it's fake.

Using the "Second Chance Offer" would afford you the full eBay and PayPal protection, which would make the purchase relatively safe. If not, ask for that and see what they say. I bet they'll disappear.

It looks way too clean to be real. I wouldn't pay more than a few hundred extra over the price of a normal DR for it just to account for the paint. That's assuming it was even done well.

Corran,

hav you seen my screen print in post #5? It's a re-paint for sure, that screen print is from an auction that ended in 2002, and the seller claims this lens was his fathers' since purchase in 1972. No chance that it is legit, unless parallel universes exist 😉

No I did not bother delving deep into links and such, just offered general advice re: eBay and Second Chance offers.

A few posts above it is mentioned the auction says cash or bank transfer only - this is an obvious red flag and anyone using eBay regularly would know to steer clear at that point when presented with such conditions from a no-name, low-feedback seller.

It's only an hour and twenty minutes away from me I could've had a look!
Nice idea Fraser. In fact I have a friend in the region who agreed to go and see it and pay for it in cash. Since I suggested this to the seller I have had no response, and hence it was probably a fake and a scam;; be aware of ween_111 on this auction site;;;
