Upcoming trip, Rolleiflex only?

I'm off on Thursday to Vegas, then to Palm Springs for a week-long family vacation at a resort, then to the Grand Canyon, then on to Sedona for a couple days (hikes, visit some sites), then back to Vegas for a day. Should be great.

I don't usually have trouble deciding what to bring. I could bring the Zeiss Ikon and the Rolleiflex. But, for some reason, I don't feel like bringing two systems, film, filters, etc. It's a bit of a pain and I don't want to keep track of it all. Despite the locations, this is all about relaxing and having fun right now, not going photo-crazy.

Originally I thought I would just bring the Zeiss for portability and weight. But I'm so in to MF right now I thought why not just bring the Rolleiflex and see how it works out?

Bad idea?

Oh, and I don't think you can go wrong with the Rollei.

It'll force you to think a little more about what you photograph -- 12 exposures per roll, one focal length, square format. Think of it as a fun challenge, and you know you'll get some great pictures. Have fun! (What film? Now there's the question....)

The Rolleiflex is THE best travel camera IMHO! You get the big negative without the weight of other larger MF cameras. The larger size neg is great especially on a trip to somewhere scenic.

Also, it's a vacation so why be bothered agonizing over switching lenses, juggling different bodies, etc 🙂

OK, Ill be honest: while I bring my Rollei on EVERY trip I also bring a second camera for back-up purposes and for the several occasions that may arise where having something smaller will be handy.

If I had a Rollei, I'd easily take it only. Pack a little fast film (Tri-X), a little slow film (Pan-F is nice) and a little color film (I loves me some Ektar) . Throw a hood & a filter in your pocket & what more would you need?

It's a hard decision! I'm setting off next month for a 3-4 month caravan (trailer in the US) trip around Australia. I'm in transition from 35mm to MF and a mix of colour and B&W to B&W only. But I have quite a bit of colour negative film to use up. When it's done I'll probably just use my GF1 for colour. My colour shots tend to be of a different type to my B&W which I process and wet print myself.

Then I'll have my M6 with a Bessa R4A as a backup in 35mm and my Rolleiflex E2 and Rolleiflex WA for MF.

Current thinking is -
M6 with HP5+
R4A with Fuji Pro-S 160 and Ektar 100 until it's used up, then kept as backup.
E2 with HP5+
WA with Fuji Pro-S 160 until it's used up, then HP5+

GF1. Leave in the bag until colour film used up and then use it for further colour.

Five cameras sounds excessive/obsessive even to me but I'm thinking the R4A will end up on the shelf or as a second-best body for when I don't want to risk the M6.
The M6 will be used when circumstances dictate a smaller faster camera, the GF1 can be used for any occasional colour work and the two Rollei's with their standard and wide lenses will be my main MF outfit.

I just went to New Orleans, brought 2 m's and the Rollei. I think I would have been fine with just the rollie, but it was nice to have the smaller M's for night time work and other wandering.

Alright! I'm doing it. The Rolleiflex and accessories are packed. I'm going to make up for the one camera/lens with lots of different film.

If anything good comes of it I promise to post images and maybe a little write up on using just this set up while traveling.
