Upgrading from epson v500 to plustek 7600?

Hello all,

Just wanted to get your thoughts on the epson v500 vs the plustek 7600. Does the 7600 give a noticeable improvement in scan quality over the v500? Worth the purchase?

The nikon scanner prices keep going up and up and up and are definitely outside my budget, which is why I am looking at possibly purchasing the plustek.

I've purchased two Plustek scanners with the past 18 months or so the last one was sent back to Adorama after only 4-5 hrs of use. Know some people speak highly of them, but both units I used over exposed the scans by 1-2 stops causing the highlight to be completely blown. I've never had this issue with the Minolta IV and yes I'm used the same program Vuscan for both scanners and no the Silverfast didn't do any better. Note I've actually been without a 35mm scanner for the past 6-7 weeks I decided that I'd rather pay to have my Minolta IV repaired then replace it with a Plustek.

I'd buy the Plustek from a reputable seller, like Amazon, try it, if you don't like it, send it back.

I Develop my film (developing I LOVE to do) but would send out locally for scans....
But with the downturn of the Economy i decided to give scanning a Try

Have had no Experience with other scanners so I cannot really Compare
My 7600i (recently acquired from rff"er TBarker)
Comoact Scanner.....Easy to use ... Scans seem to be Pretty good
Though they don't always line up properly... Needs a slight boderline cropping here and there

I do not like scanning at All ... Too Time consuming and it has KILLED my Love of Film .....:bang::bang::bang:

Am seriously thinking of getting a light box just to view negs
And make sure what I really want to Scan
OR
Cutting back on film abit (because of scanning)
Sell some equipment & add some moula for an M8.2/ M9 and entering the World of Digital
Though EVERTONE i know seems to tell me i won 't be HAPPY going digital

There is a long thread on the Leica forum about the Plustek. The marketing manager (?) also post there and is very helpful.

I Develop my film (developing I LOVE to do) but would send out locally for scans....
But with the downturn of the Economy i decided to give scanning a Try

Have had no Experience with other scanners so I cannot really Compare
My 7600i (recently acquired from rff"er TBarker)
Comoact Scanner.....Easy to use ... Scans seem to be Pretty good
Though they don't always line up properly... Needs a slight boderline cropping here and there

I do not like scanning at All ... Too Time consuming and it has KILLED my Love of Film .....:bang::bang::bang:

OR

In All Fairness to my Rff Friends who have voted aginst me going digital
They ALL have Digital cameras.... m9's or M9' coupled with the x100, Nex5, or Film Cameras

They fear i will not put in the proper PP time....get frustrated and abandon
the attempt.... Which is Quite Possible with Me. 😱

But me thinks I am Ready to be an Adventurer 😀

Also, with the M9 you'd be surprised just how little PP is necessary to obtain your end result.
Just wait until to you see all the detail contained in the image - amazing.

What the hell... the point is, if you really enjoy film, you will be back. But stick with the digital M bodies as you can use the same lenses and hopefully retain the same character of your images. The image produced by a digital camera is different no way around it. If you like sharp images, digital may work fine. If you like softer images, ....

I have been quite successful using my Nikons and have been for over 10 years, but I really don't LIKE using them. If I had an M9, I probably would actually LIKE shooting ,up to a point. It's just that the images are different and I use them for some things and film for others.

Either way, you will probably become a hybrid user like me because nothing beats the film experience (without scanning, that is...).😛

BTW, buying an M9 seems an expensive way to save money on scanning....

I have a V500 but wonder if a Plustrek would yield better results.
I`m discouraged because I hear that the build quality of the Plustrek isn`t good but have no experience of one.
Interesting what Helen says about scanning.
I don`t mind scanning but am not keen on developing....always gets me running for the digital 🙂

Helen, I don't mind scanning because I have an Epson V700 and set up EpsonScan to batch scan whilst I take a shower or head out on my bike. When I get back to the computer I have 24 big TIFFS waiting in a folder on my desktop ready for me to play with whilst downing a bottle of red. Digital was never this much fun. 😀

I have both the V500 and Plustek 7600i. For 35mm, there is no comparison. Scans from the Plustek are sharper and more detailed.

I've not had a problem with my Plustek and I purchased mine used several moths ago.

IMHO, the Plustek is the way to go for 35mm, no question. And, if you buy it from amazon, and don't like it...send it back!

I have seen many threads regarding this question and this is the general consensus. Having said that, if you want to batch scan or use med format the V700 is ok for most peoples needs.

Yep, true. One thing I forgot to mention is that scanning on the Plustek definitely takes longer...by virtue of the fact that you only scan one frame at a time.
