Upgrading from epson v500 to plustek 7600?

I think we need a good solution for batch scanning similar to a contact print, for people who develop their own film. I'm thinking about being able to scan a whole roll on a cheap 8.5x11 flatbed at a resolution of about 1000dpi, in about a minute. Then, when you've picked out some faves, scan them individually on something like a Plustek. Cheap photo flatbeds are around $150.

Sure! Here's a few scans, mostly on a relatively stock setting:

I Develop my film (developing I LOVE to do) but would send out locally for scans....
But with the downturn of the Economy i decided to give scanning a Try

Have had no Experience with other scanners so I cannot really Compare
My 7600i (recently acquired from rff"er TBarker)
Comoact Scanner.....Easy to use ... Scans seem to be Pretty good
Though they don't always line up properly... Needs a slight boderline cropping here and there

I do not like scanning at All ... Too Time consuming and it has KILLED my Love of Film .....:bang::bang::bang:

Am seriously thinking of getting a light box just to view negs
And make sure what I really want to Scan
OR
Cutting back on film abit (because of scanning)
Sell some equipment & add some moula for an M8.2/ M9 and entering the World of Digital
Though EVERTONE i know seems to tell me i won 't be HAPPY going digital

You need to get yourself a cheap flatbed scanner so you can make digital contact sheets! Very easy to pick out the ones that deserve the extra work.

I make contact sheet, slap the Printfile under a pile of books, have a look for any keepers, add some more books, and then scan the keepers when the negs. are (somewhat) flat.

David...you won't be sorry. The learning curve with the SilverFast software is steep, and often frustrating, but I've been very happy about the quality and especially the sharpness of the scans out of my Plustek 7600...

Sorry i was not trying to Fuel a digital versus Film Debate... 😉

In All Fairness to my Rff Friends who have voted aginst me going digital
They ALL have Digital cameras.... m9's or M9' coupled with the x100, Nex5, or Film Cameras

They fear i will not put in the proper PP time....get frustrated and abandon
the attempt.... Which is Quite Possible with Me. 😱

But me thinks I am Ready to be an Adventurer 😀

Helen, you are right, photography is a vocation and an avocation. Just use what works for you, or more specifically for the situation you find yourself.

I've been using the v500 for about 18 months now and I am starting to consider one of the plustek scanners. I am pleased with the v500 so I would want the plustek to be a real improvement over the v500. Here are a couple of v500 scans from Fuji acros100 in rodinal.

I am going to order a few 8x10 lab prints from the v500 scan an compare them to my D80 files just to see how the v500 holds up. If they look fine and compare well then I will stick to the v500 as I don't go bigger then 8x10 if they don't then the plustek could be my next scanner.

Helen, why do you HATE scanning? I just started it myself (with a Canon 9000), and while not trouble-free (see my thread "Vuescan frustration!") the reality is that I spend a couple minutes checking the crops in preview mode, push "Scan" (in batch mode) and walk away.

When I come back I look at the ones I want to keep and spend a few minutes more futzing with the white and black levels. I need to repeat this three times for a roll (2 sets of six frames are processed at one time). If I took a little more time up front, I could select only a few frames in preview mode for high-quality scan (but generally I want to see them all full-size).

If I sent out for scans, it would of course take a lot more time to get it back.

Are you spending a lot of time with photoshop on top of the scanning process? Is the issue that the plustek will not allow you to walk away while scanning is in progress?

Helen, I'm sorry, but that's too much drama built around scanning 🙂

Make it work around your schedule, scan while you're surfing the net, when you're reading a book, when you're watching a show, whatever. There is no rule that you have to wait until the scan is finished in one sitting.

Or build a darkroom and print traditionally. That's the right way to enjoy film photography.

If your love for film doesn't extend much beyond pressing the shutter, then by all means, try digital. You may like it and stick with it, or like me you'll end up doing both film and digital almost equally. 😀
