usable without hood ? (idjuts guide to lsm II)

I dont like hoods on small lenses, if the lens is huge it does not matter some centimetres more or less . .

Have a elmar 5cm 3,5 uncoated, it doesn´t like bright sunlight, also have a beaten with a stick 9cm elmar , it gives a nice white spot (flare) in the centre of the photo if I use it in bright sun, or it might just bee the lens (cant get everything for 25 usd)

Since I have a plan about buying a Leica II or III, I´m looking for a lens that is useful without adding a barn-door sized hood .. . hopefully a compact 50mm lens, mostly for black and white shooting.

Anyone ?

Or should I just buy a stupid hood on E**y and be quiet ? 😉

The FIKUS adjustable hood is very practical, and common enough to be affordable. It can be used with:

• Elmar 35/3.5
• Hektor 50/2.5
• Elmar 50/3.5
• Summar 50/2.0
• Elmar 90/4
• Hektor 135/4.5

Note that the first two lenses are used with the hood fully collapsed -- some variants of the FIKUS are so marked.

I had a hazed-out Elmar 90/4 that was equally bad as yours. But a nice one can be had for less than $100 with smart shopping.

The Hektor 50/2.5 is really a collector lens. A good Summar is a fun lens -- but there are a lot of dog ones out there -- very soft front glass.

I don't use a hood on my Elmar-or anything else for that matter, except the Nokton which came with one. Regardless of artistic merit, my photos at least don't suffer from flare, on these or any other cameras. I guess I always face the right way!

If a hood can be had or adapted and it is not too obtrusive I don't mind using them, but I also would prefer not to use something that makes the camera/lens cumbersome. I pretty much always wear a cap or hat of some sort so if my camera has no hood and I am shooting toward bright light or sun I use the hat to shade the lens. Works most of the time.

Thanks all of you, sounds like I might also start looking for a better condition elmar than the one I have, but funding to the camera first . .
Keh and Kevincameras have some quite budget-friendly cameras at the moment.
But as I said, funding first, now run out and shoot with the M6 . .

I have owned and used an Elmar 50mm f/3.5 coated lens for many years. I have seldom had any flair problems using it without a hood. I do use a Series VI slip-on adapter and hood when I use filters, since that enables me to use convenient Series VI filters which will fit on most of my LTM lenses.
