When I tried to register it on Leica site to my account it kept getting a “wrong serial number” error, so I reached out to Leica support about it. I also reached out to the ….
The s/n is 7 digits starting with 5898, supposedly built in 2023….

Excuse my primitive question, what benefit does registering a used camera bring to the new owner?

During my time in graduate school, I bought many Leicas, such as Leica Ms from US military surplus auctions. These ranged from unused or like-new to well-used with separated prisms. I was able to restore them to working conditions. While I do own the original black-painted Leica, I prefer the durability and high quality of modern paint. An example is my IIIc, which chrome plating loss is common due to post war poor quality, I restored it including a glossy black repaint, CLA, and replacement of the shutter curtain and beam splitter mirror.

20 years ago M6s could be had for under a grand.

The issue is that Leica refuses to authenticate it because the serial number does not match their records. If you paid a hefty amount of money, you want to make sure it’s authentic and backed by the original maker.

@Duofold RF what is your point? We know that there are many common parts between film Ms. if you are absolutely sure this is a camera that has a CNC copy of an MP top plate plus oem parts to convert an angled rewind to a rewind knob just state so.

Leica should be able to tell by the circuit board if the camera is a true original MP.

What about rewind knob? Slanted vs thumb rewind aren’t interchangeable…

There is simply no interchangeable leica body that will accept a MP top plate.

M-A? Yes will accept a MP plate but No meter, and framelines aren’t the same.

M6 millennium? The Top plate needs to be 2-3mm taller than the Mp top plate.

Other M6’, won’t accept a thumb rewind.

M2? No…

M3? No…

M4? No…

M5? No…

Even those replica chinese lenses are not exact copies. The font, the finish, the edges all over the lens… nobody should be fooled by those copies except green newbies in the Leica world…

For a used one, I think there aren't any benefits (maybe if it's stolen I can say I'm the owner), but in my case I thought to register it to verify authenticity.

You need to do it to use any residual warranty. At least Leica usually checks it, even in countries like Australia where they have to repair it for the warranty period whether the owner is the original buyer or not.

I've not contacted those other emails yet, but I asked customer support to check the # again and they said

The data record was created manually by us so that you could register the Leica MP in your own Leica account

which means ??? 😵‍💫
