Using 1600 asa w/ GSN

Am I correct....Using 1600 asa film at box speed. Use a 1 stop ND filter then set my asa dial at 800?

That'd work, I guess, if all you wanted was properly exposed ISO1600 film. Doesn't really take advantage of the speed of the film, however.
