Hello,

I was wondering if anyone out there uses their Leica M lenses for shooting video professionally and could share their experiences shooting on a Micro 4/3s camera or maybe even the RED camera with the Leica M mount. I'm thinking about getting the Panasonic GH4 body but wonder if the crop factor is going to work against me.

I work full time as a Video Editor but I find I am getting more freelance work to both shoot and then edit the video for television broadcast and customers websites. I have been relying on a Canon DSLR to shoot the video but I really want to start using my Leica M lenses. It makes me feel a little sad to see them being left behind when I start packing my video gear up.

I have a M3 & M6 with a Pre-Asph 35mm Summilux, 50mm Summicon 4th version, 50mm Collapsible Summicron, 50m Zeiss C Sonnar, 90mm Tele-Elmarit.

Thanks!

I’ve worked with several M lenses and the Black Magic Pocket camera. The obvious problem is that virtually all lenses become telephotos. The of course issue is less significant with a normal M43 body, but the widest you'll get on your setup is 70mm.

Other than that, things work fine. I usually use an external recorder so any sound caused by my changing focus and touching the camera won't be captured.

I haven't, but M mount glass isn't really suited for video because of the very short focus throw. Usable, I guess, but not ideal.

I've used M lenses on both m4/3 and the EOS-M. You should consider the EOS-M... you can share lenses with your main Canon kit too. I have Magic Lantern on it and can get an excellent cine output.

I use a Noctilux f1 and an asph 35mm f1.4..and they work great on the GH1 I have for video..I like these better than some of my older Leica glass for video projects..
I'm either going to get a GH4 or A7s in the near future for an upgrade..
