V 750 120 film holder

Hello... I'm new to 120 film. What's the deal with the 120 film holder?

It doesn't seem to fit 4 6x6 frames... the top of the holder comes down on the emulsion side of the film (Epson instructs for the shiny side of the film to face down)... that can't be a good idea.

Even if I were to cut the film into 3 frames, there would be a large gap. it's almost as if this holder was not designed for 6x6.

Any ideas? This is frustrating.

From memory all my square format MF film has been cut into three frame strips for this reason.

4 - 6x6 frames won't fit the glass platen even if there was a holder that held the strip. with the frame spacing, you're looking at around 9 1/2 " for the four frames. that's not including the holder. if you're set on cutting into four frames, I suggest getting a piece of AN glass and laying the negs down on the glass, AN on top and scan using the area guide. otherwise cut into strips of three.

I also cut 6x6 into strips of threes. Can't remember if this is the reason or if I bought the matching printfiles before...

One more: 6x6 should be cut in strips of 3 frames. And that was well before the V700. Well before any scanner existed.

The curvature of your film! No way you'll achieve quality scans. Buy a Betterscanning holder plus the AN glass. Place film with curvature up, An glass on top will flatten. Activate "mirror" option in scanning software or in post.

Don't use any glass, use specific anti-newton ring glass if u go down that route.

The convention is that you cut 6x6 in strips of 3 frames so you get one roll of film per negative sleeve page (and therefore on a single page when contact printing).

You wrote "it's almost as if this holder was not designed for 6x6." You're right, it wasn't. It was designed for medium format film which can typically go anywhere from 6,45x6 to 6x9 (and much more if you include panoramic formats). That, in addition to the fact that frame spacing can vary considerably, is the reason that you won't find any holder that has a perfect fit for your negatives. If you find you're having a problem with flare you can always just use a black piece of paper to cover the empty area. That being said, I've never had any such kind of problem with my Epson V850 (but I do have that problem with my Nikon CS9000).


As for the recommendation that you buy the Betterscanning glass holders, I would say that that advice is somewhat obsolete as Epson has finally caught up. IMO you're better off buying the original Epson holders for the V850 scanner. They're considerably cheaper than the Betterscanning ones and they also include ANR glass and let you adjust the height.

Best thing to do is throw away your V700 holders and get the holders for the V800/V850. You'll only do one strip of three 6x6 frames at a time but it comes with ANR glass built in (same with the 35mm holder) - no more hassles keeping the film flat for scanning.

Are you sure the new Epson holders include ANR glass, according to other sources they use polymer AN sheets, not glass like the BetterScanning ones, kept me so far from buying them for my V700.

Could well be polymer, but mine have given me results at least as good as from my betterscanning holder with ANR glass, and with far less hassle.

Thanks all... I didn't realize the norm was to cut into 3s. I have archival plastic sleeve sheets that fit for me to cut into 3 rows of 4 frames.

I will look into the holders for the V850...I assume they work on the 750 as well?

there is no 'norm'. cut to whatever strip you want. there are sleeves that will take three strips of 4, vertically. for example, some Hasselblad shooters may want strips of 4 so they don't need to turn the page to see frames in proper orientation. Mamiya 6 users will like the horizontal presentation. I shoot both and cut into strips of three, fwiw.
