Only downsides of largest possible scans for me time to process, even on a decent Core i5 PC, with 16GB of RAM, a 9600dpi scan of 6x9 can bog things down a bit.
Also storage space, unlikely to be an issue with modern, large hard disks, but if you're using an SSD, chances are it's very small. Also, if you're using Dropbox and the like, space is finite, and it can take a while to upload big scans.

You might check EPSON Store for referbs. That's how I got my 750 for about half the price and it does a pretty good job in my experience for over a year with 35, 120 or 4X5's.
