I have noticed that my Epson V750 is making a "knocking sound" when the carriage that caries the lens runs back to the beginning for a new sequence.
The scanner has not been transported of moved. Only been scanning quite a bit recently.
This thing is about 6 months old....
Is this normal?
Something that needs to be adjusted?
Send it back?

My 4990 sounds like a metallic screech of death any time I scan anything. If it's under warranty, send it in for service.

If there is any chance you have placed the scanner on a surface that isn't level to all four feet or is not super stable/solid, try moving your scanner to a solid table and doing a few test scans. Mine had a similar issue when it was not on a stable and flat surface so you might at least give it a try. Also, make sure your transportation locks are in the fully retracted/off position. Both are long shots but easy to try before you go to the hassle of shipping the scanner back.
In regard to the 4990, have you tried lubricating the scanner's rails to see if that quiets the screeching?

I had a similar situation with my 750...I never did determine for sure what the problem was but I know I pushed the carriage lock all the way to the "unlock" position. Hasn't made the noise since...

My V500 makes that sound if I don't have that switch on the inside lid in the right position. I think that switch has something to do with scanning documents, don't know. Now that I only scan film I keep it in the right position.

Turns out the knocking sound only occurred when I scanned transparencies.
Moving the top lid that contains the backlight resolved the problem.....

Glad to hear it. I've had my 750 for several years now and it's been a pretty solid, reliable machine...
