Value of a E+/++ Black Rim Summar?

Well I miss the Summar I sold a while back so I am in the market for another one. I already purchased the hard to find Walz 36mm push on chrome hood so now all I need is the lens to put it on.

I found a black rim summar for $199 in E+/++ condition. Is that a reasonable price for one of these lenses? How rare is the black rim version?

Last question... has anyone every purchased from www.classicconnection.com and are they reliable/honest?

I received a very nice Canon IIF2 that originally came from Sam like 8 months ago
(a photographer bought it from Sam and then it was directly traded to me for Leica gear)
Sam`s been doing vintage cameras for a long time and always had great equipment, I was very satisfied with the Canon

Black Rim Summar is somewhat uncommon, the rigid one and the tropical one`s are the rarest of versions (and almost impossible to find)

I sold a EX++ (*1937*) one like 6 months ago to another RFF`er here for $105 - he shoots WW2 Reenactment styles and the lens shot like it was 1944!
(the PERFECT lens for Black and White Film peroid!) -
current price for one with perfect glass should be about $200 - I`d say the black rim maybe $50 more? just because it`s collectable, but it`s all up to the collector

Summar`s in near mint condition (clean glass) are really hard to find.....

$200 that`s what I would pay for a mint/mint minus one - any in that condition for less than that are a deal!

I really miss the one I had it was a beauty, but I really made someone`s day with that sale, so that made me happy 🙂

I`m looking for one myself, but only in the #499000+ serial number range
(*1939* Mint with BOTH caps for my personal collection)

An Italian seller on evilbay had one about 3 months ago for somewhere in the region of $3,500

They were specially built for the North African market, from what I remember, they have a different amount of elements than the normal Summar (I think 7 instead of 6) and they were also longer? when extended I think........ that`s what I remember?

Jim Lager wrote an article somewhere about these lenses, I think less than 200 were made

I have to see if I have photos anywhere, I think they were produced 1936/37 era? - About the same time that Leitz was considering that Red fabric from Kodak for shutters also to be used in tropical areas
(Leitz never used it then and it was installed in a large batch of Leica IIIC`s in the end of 1940 to late 1941 due to wartime shortages)
and thus this became the infamous "Red Curtain" Leica IIIC
