hi all! i just got a rd1s, the vertical alinement is a bit off, i tried moving the most right screw but does not do a thing... anything im doing wrong?

Contrary to Cutler's statements (http://cameraquest.com/Epson-R-D1/_r-d1/r-d1_16.htm), Epson have changed something in the rangefinder of all R-D1s bodies or some of them. The tall vertical adjustment screw works fine with my R-D1, but with my R-D1s the screw is not tall any more and nothing happened when i tryied to screw it in 2006. Hope it is not the same with yours as the only way i've found to get the RF fixed was to return the body then.

Its still tall, but i turn it anticlockwise till its almost loose but nothing happened-.-

Hi, the epson RF is the same the VC r3 has...
I had to deal with that problem myself since i tried to adjust vertical but nothing happened, i moved the screw both ways w/o any improvement.
For that reason i had to take apart the top of the camera.
What i could appreciate was the fact the screw doesn´t reach completely the cam that must adjust the alignment.
I had to modify the screw in order to make it longer.
Only then i could actually solve the VA problem.
That R3A that i bought on ebay was listed like a Mint unused camera, so when i got it it was really new...but with that problem, so i think it may have been a factory flaw.
In your case it may not be a new camera and it maybe important to notice if the camera has been tampered previously. perhaps it could have another issue not only the screw itself.

I had my R-D1S aligned by a camera repair shop, only to have it go out of alignment again a few months later. Recognizing I couldn't afford to pay someone to keep re-aligning it for me, I overcame my fear of doing it myself. I found that it couldn't be properly adjusted without removing the top. I removed the top, adjusted the vertical alignment and used "lock tight" to secure the adjustment. The mechanism doesn't seem to be very robust, and it was easy to see why I couldn't align it blindly without taking the top off. It hasn't gone out of alignment in over a year since my DIY fix.
If you are decent with your your hands, you may find the R-D1 site info to be helpful.

While its a daunting task, its not that bad. i managed to do mine, as it was also off vertically, and i had to turn the screw practically all the way out! i still need to probably get some local variant of lock-tite (which over here in South Africa might be hard) to make sure it doesnt drift..

It's a doable task, but be very careful with the flat cables that rest underneath the grip. They are folded sharply, and moving them about too much can break them, and once broken, it's off to Epson Japan for any repairs.
I tried working on mine, but focus always seemed to be off on one end or another, so I sent it to Epson anyways for a full service, cleaning, and alignment.
