Not the most important decision I've ever had to make, but . . .

My Bronica RF645 has camera strap lugs that allow the camera to hang in either a verticle or horizontal orientation. Other camera have this option, too, but I've never owned one. So, which do you prefer, and why?

The Leica CL has a vertical orientation only and it is from the left side of the camera (when holding it.) With normal horizontal straps I wrap the neck strap around my right hand as I hold the camera. The straps coming off the other side of the camera are useless for this and I very much dislike it that way. Which side of the RF645 do the straps come off when in vertical orientation?

The lugs are on the left side of the RF645, too. It would be very difficult to wrap the strap around my right hand while shooting (unless I were shooting a handheld self portrait).

I put the strap on for the verticle orientation, but it seems odd. Not suure if I'll get used to it. I might just shift it over to what is, for me, the "normal" orientation.

The Voigtlander trigger winder allows right-side vertical strap placement, and I like that. On the Pentax 67 and Pentax LX there are four strap lugs for maximum choice, and I chose right-side vertical... until I got a right-side accessory grip for the 67 that attached to the strap lugs, forcing the strap to the left side. As noted, the Fuji GS and GA have their strap attachments only on the left, and while the Bronica is left also, it has a third lug top right for horizontal carry.

I will always choose vertical carry when available, and right side is preferable. And I'll take left-side vertical over horizontal carry any day. This is because I carry over one shoulder, and not around my neck. 😀 I find it easier and faster to grasp the camera once with a useful hold and swing it up, rather than bring the camera up and then find a good hold. If I carried around my neck, I'd absolutely go with the horizontal orientation, but I like shoulder carry so my elbow can control the camera's swinging about, and I think it's also less noticeable.

Horizontal. And I hate the vetical lugs on the CL, too, for exactly the same reasons as Frank does.

Well, I need to take the strap off anyway to send the camera in for verticle RF adjustment. I'll put it on in horizontal mode, which is portrait for this camera, when it returns.

Thanks for the feedback - I thought I was missing something as the verticle orientation felt awkward.

Whiners! 🙂

I love the vertical straps on the CL! I can hang the CL from my neck, hold it like I'm prventing it rom swinging around and still take photos. And all this inobtrusively. I don't shoot like that often but I find it useful.
