Very curious about MP

Hello all,I am looking for something different and challenging from the DSLR experience and am curious to hear from any MP owners. Obviously I am very nervous about spending such a large amount of money and not having my pictures being very good when developed. Also,if I do decide to go for it,what is the minimum that I should expect to pay for a lens(new). Thank you in advance.

Or better yet, get a used Bessa (like the one I'm selling in the classifieds!) and try that. If you're sure you like rangefinders and don't mind (or even prefer) film, then upgrade later to an M6 (something I did about two months ago). Instead of a Leica lens, you can try Zeiss or even Voigtlander.

The MP is a fine instrument, it won't make you a better photographer. it may increase your enjoyment of our pursuit. A used MP is a about 1/2 the price of a new. Since they are built like tanks, and most used ones are very lightly used, you make out big time.
Like others have said, their are many cameras out there and most will perform well for the hobbyist. Film has its charm and its flaws, but people wouldn't be here unless they enjoyed the results, and the physical process.

Different options to think about. In response to the question re budget,yes I can afford to buy a new MP now and spend a couple of thousand on a lens.

Do you think that spending "a couple of thousand on a lens", as opposed to, say, spending $200 on a lens, is the better option for you?

Is there some quality you feel the $2,000 lens will produce, as opposed to something cheaper?

Would your self-esteem suffer if you used a cheap lens?

easy answer: buy a used mp and use the extra ~1.5k to boost your lens budget.

The body I have is an M3, so I can't comment about the MP. A lens will cost you anything from $250 to $2,500. Depends on what you're looking for. According to the polls on this site, the MP is very well thought of, so you've done well so far. The lens is a matter of lots of research. I'd recommend Erwin Puts' book, The Leica Lens Compendium, or the "Polls" section of this site. I'm a 50mm guy, so the 1958 Summicron Dual Range 50mm suits me just fine. All Summicron lenses are F2. Mine cost me $500. Best of luck.

If you pay attention and buy used equipment at reasonable prices, there's no reason you won't be able to sell it for what you paid should it not work out. If you've got the resources, get the MP! As to a lens, get a 35 cron or a 50 cron depending on your taste. If you've got the resources for an MP, you've got the resources for a cron. Enjoy!

Fully agree with this. Any metered M with a 50 'Cron is the perfect starter set (I myself started with an M7 and a 50 'Cron).

Sheesh ... if someone want's to buy and can afford a new MP he should be encouraged to do so. If he doesn't like it he can always sell it and obviously he's prepared financially to take that chance ... Leica need to sell new cameras to stay in business yes?

I'd own an MP in a moment but sadly there's other gear I want/need more and my Ikon does me nicely at the moment.

To the OP ... if you can afford to shop from the top shelf it do it ... I would! 😀
