and the numbers on the meter are so small i can barely read them…with my glasses on!

The meter on my 7 is surprising accurate. You might notice a difference between low-light setting (orange) or bright-light. My meter is virtually right on when in the low-light setting, but about a stop off when set to the bright-light notch. I've read on the internet (warning!) that exposing the meter to a bright light (lamp) can improve the accuracy of a selenium-cell (don't ask me why). Maybe exposing it to a bright light "shocks" it back to normal.
Another topic entirely, but I much prefer the projected frame-lines and rangefinder of the 7 over that of the P. I never warmed up to my P. I had it about six months then I sold it. I had my Canon 7 now for about 15 years. Still use it too, which is saying a lot considering all the other classic camera gear I have.
