and the numbers on the meter are so small i can barely read them…with my glasses on!

The meter on my 7 is surprising accurate. You might notice a difference between low-light setting (orange) or bright-light. My meter is virtually right on when in the low-light setting, but about a stop off when set to the bright-light notch. I've read on the internet (warning!) that exposing the meter to a bright light (lamp) can improve the accuracy of a selenium-cell (don't ask me why). Maybe exposing it to a bright light "shocks" it back to normal.

Another topic entirely, but I much prefer the projected frame-lines and rangefinder of the 7 over that of the P. I never warmed up to my P. I had it about six months then I sold it. I had my Canon 7 now for about 15 years. Still use it too, which is saying a lot considering all the other classic camera gear I have.

i might try to pick up a pilot meter…always liked them.
thinking about using a wrist strap with the 7…i have a few of them around.
it actually came with a short swivel strap, pretty nice but too short for me…would be ok if i liked my camera high on the chest.

the body is sweet, no scratches, no dents, shutter curtain is not dimpled…even the baseplate is free of marks…comfortable in the hand, not too heavy. the 35/2.8 seems downright tiny on it...

As you use it, your meter could well come back to life. My Canon 7 meter was also surprisingly accurate. As previously mentioned the orange setting is for low light.

I mostly disregard the meters in older cameras and just use the iPhone with a light meter app (Fotometer Pro or Luxi) or the Sekonic L-328.

i have a meter app on my iphone…that's what i measured the canon's meter against…they were about 2 stops off from each other.

I wouldnt be too worried when comparing to an iphone metering app. Why not use that X100 to test exposures? Once you get the hang of how the meter works you should be able to compensate just fine.

Hi,
Hope your Canon 7 works as well as it looks. I've never owned a Canon RF camera, but respect them highly. Your 35mm f2.8 Canon lens deserves a suitable lens hood.
