California (Bay Area, Northern) very short visit to SF

We should ask Ed if he wants to be solo or would mind or would like us to join him....Ed?
 
Don't mind having the company of the local expertise. I'm booked at the Hyatt Place in Fremont, and I believe I would prefer to take the train as suggested above.

Ed, the suggestions about walking are all great, but take note that some of them involve a l-o-t of walking, much of which is up and down hills. Definitely bring your best walking shoes. And, if you're out of shape and don't walk much in New Hampshire, think twice. Nothing ruins a visit more than exhaustion and blisters.

In any case, the problem with SF is that there is too much to see and do. Do your research, spend that day, and schedule your next, longer, visit.
 
Excellent Ed. We'd love to hang out, walk around some interesting places to do some shooting, find a good, affordable place for a bite, and maybe a pint, and then some more shooting (oh. and comparing and fondling cameras and lenses!). We've done this a few times now and always welcome an excuse to do it again. Look forward to meeting you.

Walking should not be an issue. I'm in very good condition generally for a 50 year old guy. I believe I have some busitis going on in one knee right now, but it isn't much of a factor for walking and hopefully it will be calmed down by then anyway

Stay away from the people. The sights are ok. I was discharged from the Army from Oakland. The sargent suggested we try and fly out of any airport other than San Fran as we were not safe in uniform in that city. I wanted to get home fast and San Francisco was the first flight out. We had to fly in uniform to get 1/2 price tickets. Five people in the airport saw me and walked briskly toward me to give me a piece of their mind, or whatever they refer to that organ in SAN FRACCISCO. Funny, as soon as they go close enough to see my eyes, they decided to look somewhere else to voice their opinion. The way they treated returning veterans is much more disturbiing than anything I have seen since I have been back.
 
whew! thank goodness we're not going to hang out at the san francisco INTERNATIONAL airport, where there are people from all over the world. got to avoid THOSE people at all costs.

One of the most famous watering holes in the City is located adjacent to the corner of Columbus and Broadway (North Beach). From this intersection go east on Broadway 25 yards to Romolo Place, turn left, and walk up 50 yards to the bar on right side, kitty corner. You will be able to tell it is from another era (circa 1800s). This is real S.F, not a tourist stop. Tell the bouncer Big Paul from 18th street sent you. Enjoy.

Generalize much lately? I've been to numerous events in San Francisco with men & women in uniform and they are treated with the utmost respect. I can't say the same for some leaders that we have in the WH that would send our men & women to a needles war.

Anyway...back to the subject...

I say we meet at the best dive in Chinatown/North Beach that Ray described which is Mr. Bing's. That place is hilarious.

I would recommend the Gaeity Theatre in the Tenderloin on Turk or Eddy right off Taylor. A wonderfully seedy, old style NY Times like art cinema (porn theatre). Then go up the hill and visit Trinity Episcopal Church, a monolithic European style deal on California. It will give you the yin and yang SF tour. Forget North Beach. Visit the wonderful coffeehouses and restaurants in the Mission district, by all means ck out the SF Museum of Art downtown, ride Bart, eat at The House Of Nanking on Kearny in the Chinatown District, avoid Muni like the plaque that it is, read the paper and get a feel for frisco politics (always good for a laugh), eat at Original Joe's, walk up Powell from Market to the Bay, bring a good camera, and pray that the recent weather has let up.
