viewfinder ramelines, parallax correction

I have a question about this.

I read last night that the Leica IIIg had parallax correction framelines in the viewfinder. Well, I think it was the first LTM with framelines...so that got me thinking.

Is there is a difference between a viewfinder with framelines and a viewfinder with parallax correction framelines or are they one the same. As in, any/most viewfinders with framelines are already parallax corrected.

These are wholly separate features, there are cameras with static and with parallax corrected framelines - and there have been some that had parallax correction but no framelines (using a solid frame or mask instead).

That being said, I don't know of many LTM cameras with framelines that do not have parallax correction. Only Russian cameras come to mind.

Note that the IIIg not only has framelines, but projected ones (small extra window in the front). That makes it quite special for its size.


Parallax correction has its limitations; not only does the frame move when focusing closer, but the FOV changes too, and most parallax corrections don't compensate for the latter. I like the Hexar AF implementation, where one corner of the frame moves, and the other doesn't, so the frame gets smaller as you focus closer.
