Vintage Leica glass in LA?

Agree with Ergo. He will not be cheap; OTOH, everything will be exactly as described. The latter is not a small thing...

Try Samy's on Fairfax near Third. It is the biggest store in L.A. It is four or five stories tall. On the third floor they have vintage and new 35mm cameras and lenses. The Leica counter is the first on your left after you leave the stairs and elevator alcove. The newer used ones will be under the glass counter there. The older used stuff is in the tall cabinets in the middle of the room.

Samy's prices can very from low to astronomical, but it's worth a look. Last I checked, they must have had at least 20 Leica IIs and IIs in the center section. I did not look at the lens section. Unfortunately, you cannot see the complete inventory online nor will ANY of the clecks know the prices or availability until you point at the item and ask.

There is also their "used and bargain" store a couple of blocks down the street. Try the main store, third floor first. Samy's is the largest store in L.A.

While you are there, you must have lunch in the Farmer's Market (not the "Grove"). It is a taste of L.A. from the 1920s. You will have a choice of about 50 places to eat. A must for visitors. Farmer's Market is about 2 blocks from Samy's. If you drive there, park in The Grove's parking lot. Museum Row (Peterson Car, LA Art Museum, La Brea Tar pits, Page museum) and CBS Television City are one block further away. The Tar pits area is a one of a kind. It has yielded the largest Pleistocene fossil collection in the world. Samy's is in the part of town that is the best for the more sophisticated visitor. Anyone can direct you there.

Lots of good street and people photography in the Farmer's Market. Maybe the best in L.A. Bring a fast 35 or 28 lens and daylight film. The Market is a grocery shopping and eating place for locals and visitors. There must be 70-100 booths under an open canopy. There is good street photography in the Grove also just next door. For the Grove bring a 50mm. Most museum exhibits there allow non flash photography. The Peterson Car museum has "period" streets with store fronts and cars. You walk into period sets and streets that match the age of the car. The lighting is weird, so you will need to PS the color balance. The tar pits and the Japanese museum offfer interesting shooting too. This part of town is the best for photography!

Stephen Gandy's operation is on the far northwestern edge of L.A. (near my house) You might wish to call him first.

You alaready have a post about Kevin's camera on Wilshire near Grand. If you go to Kevin's camera in downtown, go north a few blocks on Grand toward the Civic Center and grab some interesting shots of the new Ghery Disney building in the Music Center. Be careful in that part of town. The traffic will be very bad during and around the rush hours.
