I'm headed to New York next week for a little business, a little pleasure. Can anyone recommend some good camera shops to visit while I'm there? I'll mostly be downtown, and will be looking mostly for LTM and M42 stuff.

Thanks!

Almost none, unfortunately.

eBay has killed off the once-thriving used camera business in retail stores.

You can try B&H used department but I'm not thrilled with the prices or selections there.

I pick up a lot of stuff at flea markets, but good buys can be few and far between. You either get someone who has some old junk cameras that they imagine is worth a fortune, or the stuff is badly battered and useless. You have to have an eye for flea market items plus the ability act fast and bargain hard.

THIS place has a modest selection of interesting used items. Ignore the comments about the owner.

Wow. That is super depressing. What I have reaped on eBay, I must now sow in Manhattan.

Anyway, there are a few general things I need--filters, a hood--so I can at least enjoy finding them at B&H or Photo Village.

Nothing in Brooklyn either? I'll be there, too.

For odd things like filters and hoods try Lens and Repro (www.lensandrepro.com). Photo Gizzmo is also an interesting place, mostly for large format, but he has some unusual smaller format items (www.photogizzmo.com). Photo Gizzmo's website isn't particularly well developed, so the stock isn't particularly picked over by internet customers. Neither is particularly cheap.

Their name is a bit deceiving as Brooklyn Camera is out on Long Island, in Merrick, about a 50 minute train ride from Penn Station.

Not a huge selection, but if you are in the neighborhood, there are occasionally interesting used items at Foto Care on 21st Street btwn 6th + 7th Ave.
