Vivitar 283 with Leica iii

I just got it, and it's so damn hard to manually sync it with my iii! I remember there's a flash sync that attaches onto the shutter speed dial right? Or any idea how I can sync it? Thanks

Flash connectors on early III bodies are likely synched for bulbs. So, it fires your electronic flash too early.

What shutter speeds are you using? The III's curtains are only fully open at speeds of 1/20th and slower.

Can't be done otherwise. That's the downside of the focal plane shutter system. The curtain is only fully open at those speeds and slower.

You have to compensate with lens aperture and the flash settings.

They upped the max sync speed on the IIIc and younger cameras to 1/30th, but that's the limit to what they can achieve with this shutter design.

The way I use flash on my Leica III is to open the shutter with bulb, fire the flash and then close the shutter.

The only way this can be done in the daytime is by using a dark enough neutral density filter to drop your exposure to one second or more. This will allow just enough time to open the shutter, fire the flash, and close it.
