What mount does the Voigtlander 28mm Ultron f1.9 Aspherical lens have and is it possible to change?

The reason I am asking is I bought one a while back to use on an Epson RD-1 that I recently sold. Nowadays I am using a Pentax k-5 as a stopgap solution until the new Pentax FF DSLR comes out and am trying to figure out if it is possible to mount this Voigtlander lens on this k-mount camera via an adapter?

As far as I can see no off-the-shelf adapter exists for mounting a lens with a Leica M mount on a K-mount camera. But I have come across various references on the internet that mention this lens has a screw mount and attaches via an adapter to Leica-M mount cameras like the RD-1. That confuses the heck out of me since as far as I can see the bayonet mount on my lens is very firmly attached and does not seem to be removable?

Maybe Voigtlander make several different models of this lens including one with a fixed Leica-M bayonet mount and a different model with a screw mount?

Then again there is a little screw on the side of the lens... so maybe all I need to do is give it a firm whack with a sledge hammer and see what happens?

I realise this is a dumb question but I would like to know anyways if the mount on the Voigtlander 28mm Ultron f1.9 is interchangeable or not... before I try the sledge hammer :D

The 28/1.9 is LTM only from the factory. It wont work on K-Mount (too far from the sensor).
Thanks Bille this is good to know.

Just to clarify, does this mean the lens has a Leica thread mount with a Leica-M bayonet mount permanently attached at the factory?

I have this lens. It is basically a LTM lens which can be used with earlier Leica LTM cameras without modification. You can also attach a separate LTM to M adapter to the lens which will enable you to use it on M mount cameras. These adapters come in 3 flavours, each bringing up a different pair of framelines in the viewfinder.

EDIT: There is also 28mm f2.0 Ultron which has a native 'M" mount.

Also the Leica screw mount (M39) and the Pentax screw mount (M42) are not the same! The Ultron, like others mentioned, comes in M39 mount and can be adapted to M mount (doesn't have to be permanent - the adapter ring can be taken off). The M42 lenses can be adapted to K-mount. But not M39->K unless you're willing to shoot at some insane macro distances only :)

OK now I am confused (again). :bang:

Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing here is a link I just found to a photo of the lens I am talking about. The mount looks like this:

It "looks" to me the mount is seriously attached to the lens. But you guys plus your friend and mine Ken Rockwell in his review of how it works on a Leica bayonet M-mount camera, as this one also does, states: "the lens ships in a screw mount so you need to buy an adapter ring to fit on your camera?

Does this mean the bayonet mount is actually a removable adapter? Or not?
Maybe I just need more sugar in my coffee?

OK now cooking with gas:
i) yes... the bayonet mount is an adapter that can be removed (by undoing the small screw on the side of the barrel or....)!!
ii) yes, the lens mount is M39!!
iii) no, due to the design of the lens there is no decent way to adapt the M39 mount to Pentax K-mount...

...all of which I can see now that I think I get the picture and also sugar in my coffee is already explained quite clearly in your replies to my post if I had read them more carefully, so

thanks

would this not work?

Brand new for M39 Lens to M42 camera mount Adapter
You can change your m39 mount lens to m42 mount

This is aluminum made adapter step ring.
You able to change all m39 lens , e.g. leica m39 lens to m42mm,
then you can use all m42 mount adapter, such as m42/canon ; m42/nikon; m42/sony etc

looks like it would permit connection but maybe not infinity focus?

The Ultron 28 1.9 is designed for Leicas, where the lens sits very close to the sensor/film plane. In an SLR the lenses sit a lot further out.

As such, even with that adapter the lens will not be able to focus properly.

You will only be able to use it as a macro lens, i.e. focus really close.

So there is M39 and there is L39/Leica thread mount (LTM) and then there is leica m mount.

Back in the 50's some SLRs used the same size thread as leica, but they moved the lens farther away from the film plane in order to fit the mirror box in. These are called m39 lenses (See Zenit 3 cameras for example).

L39/LTM lenses won't work on M39 cameras because the lenses need to be closer to the film plane. M39 lenses CAN work on L39/LTM cameras because you can put a spacer adapter in between an M39 lens and an l39/ltm camera.

for an example of an M39 lens, check out the Helios 44 58mm which is for the Zenit cameras. In fact this was made for both M39 and M42 mount, both varieties exist.

The M39 versions can use an M39 to M42 adapter which will allow them to be used on an M42 mount.

L39/LTM lenses can't be used on M42 mount.
