One to fit Nikon/Contax cameras?
It will fit a Contax camera, but won't focus properly. That's why its an "S" lens (for Nikon S-mount only) rather than an "SC" lens(for both Nikon S-mount and Contax) like the 35/2.5 Skopar and wider.

Stephen Gandy said it was added because of getting a more compact lens. Makes sense. It's mysterious to me why a modest-speed f/2.5 50mm would "need" seven elements, but surely that adds to the heft and feel of solidity.
BTW i can see no difference in crispiness in my shots between my CZ C-Sonnar 1.5/50 and the Color-Skopar when shot at 2.8. At 5.6 i can see a small effort for the Skopar! An Amazing little lens!!
Yes, that makes sense, as at 33mm long it's shorter than either the 50 Heliar Classic or the Planar or C-Sonnar for instance. And yet it's virtually identical in size to the new Leica 50/2.5 Summarit which has 6 elements in 4 groups.Stephen Gandy said it was added because of getting a more compact lens. Makes sense.

The square LH-2 shade is pretty nifty (I think the standard round shade is a bit too minimalist if you're actually shooting in bright sunlight).
But I discovered that I you remove the little round shade, a Leica 12585 or IROOA clips on nicely!

Interesting, kermaier! I like the lens's looks with the little round shade, but I expect a rectangular shade would be more efficient.

I think the LH2 hood is perfect, not to mention, it looks good. Here's a shot of mine attached to the 35/2.5 Color Skopar. The 50/2.5 is next to the camera.
Btw, there is a black 35/2.5 Color Skopar for sale over at MapCamera

maybe good but the shade sold with the lens cannot be seen through the viewfinder , that's quite important imho

it is maybe 1 or 2 mm longer than the 35
I have both + the 21 CV f4 LTM

Really? That would make it quite small indeed! And yes, either the 21 or 28 would round out the wide end...
Don't suppose you have a picture of all three, lined up?
I don't use to make pictures of my gear
the 21 and 35 have the same barrel

yes, they're the same, and they are lovely
The 50 and 28 are small and heavy, though--in a good way.
The CV LTMs are beautiful lenses.

Too bad they are not doing anymore LTM :/ (except special editions)

I knew the 35 and 25 (21?) shared the same barrel which is great. Good to hear the 50 isn't much bigger as well. Thanks!
It's shorter than a fully extended Leica collapsible lens.

I've been shooting BW landscapes w/ mine recently. Will turn to color this weekend.

Great lens indeed.
This is my go-to-lens for iiif with the 28/3.5 skopar.
I have one in silver and one in black. I am keeping the silver one. If anyone interested in the black, please send me a pm.

I'd always had my eyes set on a collapsible 50mm Elmar to use as a compact, daytime lens but the images and user reports on this CV lens have me thinking that this lens might be a better alternative. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any examples for sale, even on eBay! Does anyone know how much I should be asking, approximately, for a silver version of this lens?

You do pay for that with a slight amount of pincushion distortion, as it is effectively a tele lens.
I wasn't happy with mine at all, by the way, so I sent it back, and it turns out it really was a faulty sample.
Too bad, now I am without one again and they are becoming quite rare...

Hell yeah...I was lucky with both my Skopars. I already have a 35/2.5 in silver but I am very tempted to go and grab that black version in a store in Shinjuku.
Anyway, for those who remain unconvinced by the 50/2.5, here are a couple of samples from when I was in Sydney:
