Voigtlander 50mm f1.1 Nokton VM - any good? I've read a few reviews but I trust the varied opinions here more.

Also, I've found this lens in excellent condition for £350 and new it's at least double that, so I wonder if I've got the correct lens or if they made a couple of versions. If not and it's a winner, I'll grab it tomorrow for use hopefully this weekend :)

There is only one F1.1 Nokton- great lens, grab it at that price.

There is also the 50/1.5 Nokton. Discontinued, and that is an "okay" price for that lens.

While you are being taught about google and searching ....

£350 is a great price for the 1.1. You can resell easily at a profit after trying.

First off, no matter what I type into the search here, I get nothing at all back.

Second, thanks for the replies about the lens. Once confirmed it's actually that lens at that price, I'll buy :)

Turned up to buy, they want 3x what they advertised it for. Not happy. Now on the hunt again for a 50mm for the M6.

I've got the 1.1/50 now for a couple of month and I agree with DN. (his review addresses of course th 1.1 Nokton, not the 1.5 as stated in the link). It is an impressive lens which is very useful also for non-1.1 photography. My copy built is first rate. The only downside if you will ist its size, but that is equally correct for the Nocti. There is a separate hood available, which is well made and thought through (fits reversed, own filter thread).

The lens is a good example of how comments in the net can blow things totally out of proportion. Yes there is a slight focus shift visible for me at apertures around 2.8 - 4, but at least with a digital RF (where it matters most, I suspect) you can quickly adjust to it.

£350 is a great price, 3x that is a terrible price, but that's the UK for you.

I have a 1.1 and had to send off to have it calibrated, as it was not reaching infinity. I'm waiting for a roll back from the lab to see if the repair was successful. I think for the money, it seems a good deal, but if you're not into razor-thin DOF, then not sure it's worth it over a far smaller Summicron, which will cost you less.

Obviously if you want the 2 stops more speed, then it has few competitors really except the Canon and the Noctilux.

The lens is great. It is also huge. I ended up not using it and not looking forward to having to deal with the size, weight and viewfinder blokkage. I recommend getting a 50mm 1.4 like a Summilux or the Canon.
I don't believe that last stop to be that important, and if you want the shallow DOF something like a 50 Summilux is very similar probably because the Nokton is actually a bit shorter than 50mm and the Summilux is actually a bit longer. Several reviews have shown this. More importantly 50/1.4 can be just as small as a 50 Summicron, while the Nokton is as large as an SLR lens.
