Another very tempting new lens from Cosina, even though I'm very happy with the performance of the "old" 28/2 Ultron. What's enhanced here?
Looking over the cross-sections to find any differences, it can be seen that:
a) it's optically changed from the prior version (flatter front element and reduced diameter - 39mm filter - from 10/8 to 10/7 elements/groups)
b) the middle groups (Gaussian elements) kept nearly the same as the first version (28/1.9 LTM)
c) some more resemblance to the first version which was a true innovative design (9/7) and the fastest 28mm Leica mount lens when introduced.

Lets hope the two Asph surfaces improve optical performace and not just there to reduce the lens length.

Unlike Leica, Cosina's recent updates tend to be significant. As noted above, similar formula to the ƒ/1,9 version than the more recent f/2 so they must think the former had greater potential for improvement. Doubtless a Leica Summicron-killer, like the 2/35.

I had the 1.9. It was meh at best. I bought the hexanon-M and it was much better.
The 3.5 was pretty good though.
I do hope these new lenses are much better than the older design.

Any news on the 28mm in Apo?

There are currently no rumors of a 28mm APO lens. The APO lenses are designed with Sony in mind as well as Leica, and the 28mm focal length is a graveyard on E-mount. So either Voigtlander will break the mold, or follow everyone else and make a 24mm lens instead. I assume we will also see an updated 21mm f3.5 in the silver and black brass barrels soon as well.

28/1.9 made much color shift with digital sensors, right? I'm impressed that the current 28/2.0 looks that good with digital, even if it wasn't designed for it back in 2008. With the aspherical element of the new design, obviously one reason is enlarge sensor clearance to avoid color shift/ improve edge performance, since pixel peeping mania.
For me there is just no reason to buy it because I didn't find any restraints with the current 28/2.0 (on 24 MP sensors). Also I like the handling with that lens. It has a small shade and the lens cap fits there nicely.

Interesting! I thought the new Ultron 28 was going to be an update of the 28 f/2, thus decided to pass as I'm happy with both my f/2 VM and f/1.9 LTM.
However, it looks like the new Ultron 28 appears to be more of an update of the older f/1.9 LTM version.
The 28mm f/1.9 Ultron LTM is one of my most used lenses. My copy suffers from a slight tilt, soft on the extreme edge on one side. However, it's mostly irrelevant for my uses and unobtrusive at 24mp. I had thought about trying another copy out of curiosity but now I'm looking forward to seeing some sample photos from the new Ultron.

CHROME
Could you please confirm that these are indeed silver chrome lenses instead of silver painted? Isn't the 35mm Ultron Vintage silver painted? Thanks!

the 28 is definitely chrome.
the 35/2 silver looks exactly the same side by side,
I'm starting to think the initial 35 Ultron II press release was incorrect
