Voigtlander Ultron 35mm F2 Aspherical Images

I see both lenses being useful these days. A classic one and a modern one. Neither is perfect. I prefer classic lenses.

Yes for sure, it would be a boring world if there was 'one lens to rule them all'...

How are you guys finding the ergonomics and handling of this lens vs. the Nokton or Color Skopar? The Ultron ASPH looks like a total winner optically, but in photos of the lens it looks like the DOF scale would be very difficult to see. Also, are you finding the fact that it focuses down to 0.5m an issue compared to other lenses that stop at the 0.7m close focus distance of (most) M-mount cameras? Are you missing shots due this inconsistency?

I owned the 35mm Color Skopar (VM) for about 5 years prior to getting the Ultron. Personally I prefer the ergonomics and handling of the Ultron, mainly because it isn't as cramped as the (very) tiny C-S. But at the end of the day I like the ergonomics of both. The build quality of the Ultron is noticeably better, particularly the aperture ring movement.

As others have mentioned, there's been lots of teeth gnashing about the focus 'stick'. Personally I have no issue with it, it falls to hand easily and the mechanism is smooth as can be. There's also a full knurled ring so you can either use that or the stick.

I thought the 0.5m focussing would bug me, but it never has. It's clear when the focussing comes off the rangefinder cam, and whenever I'm focussing an minimum distance I'm paying a fair bit of attention anyway. It's also genuinely handy having the closer focus ability if you ever choose to adapt the lens.

It's never occurred to me that the depth of field scale would be an difficult to see?

I can't comment on the 35mm Nokton as I've only used one once...

^ Pretty light Nick! I've always thought Tassie has more similar landscapes to NZ than to the rest of Aus.

Bit of a mish mash really! Some of the wilderness areas are very similar to New Zealand, but then a lot of the midlands and east coast has that classic Australian eucalyptus landscape.

I’m sorry, I don’t follow?

I think I can decipher for you, Nick ;)

What Erik is somewhat cryptically saying is he doesn't like focus sticks and shiny bits on his lenses and he likes his lenses hooded and as black as possible (that's his perfect pair above). And definitely no shiny lens hood mounts because... flare.

I remember thinking that the shiny lens hood mount of my Nokton 35/1.4 V1 caused it to flare (particularly the ring flare it does sometimes) but when I discovered it still flared in the same way even with a black filter ring (with no glass) attached to fully cover the hood mount, I stopped worrying about it.

Thank you Jon, what I wanted to say was that a year or so ago I hoped for an all black version in brass of the Nokton 35mm f/2 (to match the Color Skopar 50mm f/2.5). Of course, that did not come. But what came, was the LLL 35mm f/2 in an all black brass version! Therefore I felt a bit clairvoyant.

Erik.

Gotcha. I knew Erik wasn’t a fan of the stick and the shiny bits, just didn’t understand the clairvoyant comment.

Enjoy the LLL 35mm! Very interesting lens
