Voigtlander Vitessa question

What's the big metal pole sticking out of the top of the Voigtlander Vitessa?

The plunger acts in place of a wind-on lever. Depressing it winds the film on one frame and pre-tensions the shutter ready for the next shot.

Once you are used to it it is possible to us it to take pictures in rapid succession.
