VR/IS and tripods...what gives?

I bought my first VR lens, a Nikon, and I have read that I should turn off the VR when the camera is on a tripod. Why is that? I understand that VR/IS and a tripod is overkill, but will it damage the camera in some way?

VR works by subtly moving the lens, so as to absorb and negate your movements.

The Tripod doesn't move, but the VR system will be moving the lens, and therefore the image will be affected. Essentially you lose the benefits of putting the camera on the tripod because the lens is still moving, so your image will blur.

A tripod is generally believed to prevent image blur, but camera shake can occur due to the movements of the quick-return mirror or shutter curtain, or winds. This camera shake movement has different characteristics compared to normal camera shake caused by handheld shooting. Nikon’s VR technology makes it possible to detect and compensate this type of camera shake, as well. (Note: Some VR lenses do not have this function.)
Nikon has developed its original VR technologies by rigorously studying the various aspects of camera shake.


Based on this statement I'd say you can use a tripod and benefit from it. I know I use my 18-200 VR lens with a tripod all the time and don't get blurred images.

That's what mirror lock up is for, I'd always knock VR/IS off when using a tripod, but then again 99.9% of my shooting is handheld, and I don't use Nikon, haha, so it's worth experimenting with the VR, and going with what works best for you.

The VR system isn't going to be moving the lens if the motion sensors aren't picking up any motion of the lens/camera. If the tripod isn't moving then the VR system won't be moving the lens.
You have to understand how the 'system' works in order to make the most of it.
