Vuescan and Epson V700

As I understand it, the Epson V700 has 2 lenses focused on different points. How can I tell which lens Vuescan is using, and how does one choose?

When you choose "film with film area guide" or reflective within the software (the wording can vary slightly between software packages), it uses the lens that is supposed to focus at the glass level. When you choose "film with film holder," it switches to the lens that is supposed to focus at approximately 3 mm.

I'd be interested in hearing your experiences with Vuescan and the V700 Simon. I'm using the Epson software and keep wondering whether Vuescan would be any better.

A slightly sloth thing to ask as I have a Vuescan licence to test it with but it needs fiddling to get it working again.

i got the vuescan tryout version for my v700 but i was disappointed on the level of difficulty and lack of an intuitive interface. I could not bother to start learning the whole thing.
Also, the most important thing why i was considering it, was the colour space control and the batch scanning option in one package. Colour space thing is well done in the silverfast se, batch is implemented in the epson scan software, but none of the se two have both requirements properly made. And then i found out, the tryout vuescan lacks both of these features.

I have Vuescan and love it with my Nikon LS5000. I used to use the Epson software when I had a 4990 before and thought it was excellent. This time around, I am sticking to Vuescan with the V700 but I have to admit it's not as smooth as it is with the Nikon.

If I was doing colour, I would be reaching for the Epson software for sure.

Good question. My understanding (but I could be wrong) is that the lens used depends on the 'mode' you select (under the 'input' tab):
- 'flatbed' or 'transparency 8x10' modes: focus on the glass
- 'transparency' mode: focus 3mm above the glass.
I scan my negs either in the Epson holders or in the fluid mount, so I have Vuescan set on 'transparency' mode. I believe that's the correct approach but then again I could be wrong - in which case someone please correct me!

I mailed Ed Hamrick and his response was...

It's all done automatically, depending on the choice of
"Input | Mode". This is done inside the scanner - VueScan
has no control over the lens that the scanner uses.
