I purchased a new iMac 27 with i7 fast 4 core processor. 16 GB ram due to arrive tomorrow.
I tried to move the KM software from the old iMac to the new and it would not work and both had snow Leopard. The soft ware was originally loaded to Tiger and it still worked. So much for easy migration.
I found software on line, but it was compressed and required stuffit to expand. I did not want to pay without knowing it worked.
Tried Vuescan which everyone brags about. YUCK. Numerous tries to get something even close. Psycodelic colors. clipped both shadows and highlights on non contrasty color neg, crossed curves on several colors meaning the shadows go one way and highlights another, contaminated colors. I could not fully correct the scans no matter what I did. Finally I got some settings fairly close and I wanted to save them for another frame. There does not seem to be a way.
Finally a free "Stuffit" was found and I expanded the KM software for 10.6
OSX. The scanner at 4x sampling and max resolution just hums along and does not stop and start like the 2007 i Mac . The colors are back to looking correct and I do believe they look better than on the old machine.
Ed Hamrick does recommend an It8 target to profile the scanner. That might help. But i never had to screw around like that with the manufactures hardware.
Anyway the iMac 27 with i7 processor and just the 4 GB ram is a superb machine for photos. Has a terabite drive. I have a LaCie external to hold non current work.. Keeping the HD empty speeds up the processing considerably as it becomes a giant scratch disc if the memory overflows.
