let's see what I can contribute...first, the comment about developing for a thinner, lower contrast negative. This is akin to developing for a condenser enlarger, nothing more drastic. so you aren't really decreasing contrast of your negative by _that_ much.
Also, as Ray does, I also adjust things like white point, black point, etc. But I do not actually clip anything off, I rather adjust to make sure I get everything I need. I then do basically levels and a slight S curve to get a pretty darn good image. VS gives me the data that I could not get with NikonScan or EpsonScan.
